Hanset Brothers, Inc.
Redistributor of Janitorial and Maintenance Supply Products Brushes and mops were added for resale along with additional lines. In 1977 Hanset Brothers, Inc.
Founded by Leon Hanset and his brothers to manufacture and sell corn brooms, Hanset Brothers grew to become one of the largest broom manufacturers on the west coast. became one of the first Master Distributors for Rubbermaid Commercial Products.
A couple old products: Hysan Vandalex and Texize Wood Plus. Hysan was a top chemical manufacturer and I basically had forgotten about Texize (a division of Morton Thiokol that made the o-rings for the Challenger disaster). Our uncle Gordon Earsley, who ran Hanset Bros., Inc. with dad, started his own independent rep firm and represented Hysan among other lines.
I remember an old tech calling this method of file transfer the “Nike Network.” Save the file to a floppy disk, remove it, walk it to the another computer. 😉
I wonder if Hirsh is still interested in “close-out” items? We have a few things left. 😉
As a kid I remember finding a few liquor bottles hidden behind broom corn. Dave Hanset and Gordon Earsley stopped the drinking when they took over. I remember dad saying workers wouldn’t get a paycheck until after their shift on Friday. Apparently when they got the check on Thursday they might not show up the next day. Here is a bottle I found that dad wrote the name on. Between the paint-room fumes and the wine it probably wasn’t a very healthy lifestyle, but times were often hard for a lot of these people.
Original “clip art.” You would cut out the images you needed (with actual scissors), paste it on a page using a light box, then the printing company would take a photo of the completed page that they then printed. What a pain. Later we would have to scan these before the manufacturer had image files available.
Brown Beauty Broom skirt from around 1940 I would guess. Another one I hadn’t seen before. New and unused. It must be cellophane?
Going through things I found this old broom label I hadn’t seen before. We always had lots of old labels so we used them for writing down employee work. This one for Frank Post would be for sewing 9 dozen Ever Blue and 3 dozen whisks. He must have also made whisks as the note suggests. October 11, 1960.
As we are closing down our operations we have moved our old broom making equipment. We are actively looking for a good location to set up a broom making display.
Since we purchased a lot of handles for our brooms from Cascade Handle in Eugene, we also had access to threaded and tapered handles. We were the source for many janitorial supply companies for their push broom and squeegee handles. Before extension handles were widely available we sold a lot of tapered wood handles for window brushes. The longest stocked item was the HH130 tapered fir handle that was 1 1/8" diameter x 144" long. These were stored standing up due to there length and were difficult to ship.
I waited to post this for any Wordle solvers but today’s word was “broom.” 🙂
Old boxes of steel wool, made in USA.
Broom corn warehoused at Lucien Kempf's warehouse in Lindsay Oklahoma. At the Time Lindsay Oklahoma was marketed as "The Broomcorn Capital of the World." The growing conditions created the finest broomcorn ever available. Shown in the picture is Lucien with Leon Hanset (on right) who was on a trip to purchase broomcorn from the latest crop.
Second generation owner David Hanset during the Korean War.
BARCO Supply Medford broom label. At one time there was a BARCO Supply in K-Falls, Medford and Roseburg that I know of, possibly one in Bend? This label is probably from the 60's.
David Hanset’s business card from around 1980. Drackett, Hysan & Zimmerman were big players but now are gone.
