May 2024 Orbit Artist Spotlight:
VJ8K3 (Jake Frost)
All forms of art have made their way into most corners of the electronic scene, but
audiences have been enjoying the marriage of music and visuals since the times of the Grateful Dead. VJ8K3 (Jake Frost,) aims to meld the influence of these classic images with the most eclectic of the new. The result is something spectacular, the epitome of “cool, trippy things to go along with the music.” Studying video in college, it was a natural progression for Jake to make the move to VJ, but it took him quite a long time to commit. After eight years of being blown away by festival visuals, he finally decided, “I should do that. This is my passion and what I want to do.” Living in Hawaii during the winter, Jake spent the time perfecting his craft. There he not only honed his skills, but developed a style of his own.
Every VJ has a different way of gathering footage. In Jake’s case, he uses both his own creations and the works of others to build an extensive library from which to choose from. He scours the internet for unique clips, gets the artist’s permission to use them, and then blends everything together for his performances. “It’s just like DJing other people’s music and putting it all together; it’s a whole art form in and of itself.” Jake’s images are simply those that he’s drawn to. He aims for no image overlay, and many layers of multipliers. Jake is inspired by the music and plays to complement the musician’s set. His goal is for the imagery to fit these tracks “in style, sense, rhythm, and light.” While much of a VJ and DJ’s responsibilities mirror one another, it’s important to note that while DJs must organize an hour’s worth of material, Jake’s sets last all night long, and he feels it’s his responsibility to entertain the crowd throughout the entire night.
VJ8K3 plans to share his love of the organic, using the classic theme of drip imagery. Come to not only dance and listen to the music, but to see. The aisles of seating at The Strand are waiting and ready for tired dancers to sit down for a minute; come enjoy the spectacle VJ8k3 adds to an already amazing evening.
May 2024 Orbit Artist Spotlight:
Cameron Kelly
(Q***r House Collective, NOLA Housing Project, Kinetic Productions, Simplistic Sound Music Company)
Electronic music takes you places; Cameron Kelly takes you on a mission to find them. For this DJ, tracks are about much more than their melody or basslines. As he puts it, “House music has its own dogma; it’s more of a message than a genre.” Cameron first translated this message while attending raves, reveling in the world of love and inclusivity inherent to the subculture, one where humans gather to celebrate music, forget their cares, and share their hearts with complete strangers. Trying to replicate this feeling on his own, he brought thousands to the raves he began throwing in 1996. But after ten years of watching big name DJs hone their craft around him, Cameron was finally inspired to buy his first turntables. His relationship to music then turned from consumer to provider, and suddenly he wasn’t just part of the dancefloor; now he was responsible for making people move.
Though originally from New Orleans, Cameron now resides in Philadelphia, a city where he’s not only felt welcome, but one with an underground scene that is still thriving. Cameron is a perfect fit for this environment, enjoying the luxuries of always being sought-after, and always having a place to play. With a flair for disco house, Cameron mixes the genre with anything he’s drawn to along the way. In his tracks you can find latin rhythms, deep walking basslines, and heavy kicks. His music encompasses the new while paying homage to live instrumentation, classic breakbeats, and epic vocals. One track might bring you to a joyful summer celebration in the city, where kids are playing hopscotch in the street, and grandmothers are dancing their asses off in bathrobes and curlers. Another might bring you to the pews of a church with a choir so powerful it forces you back into your seat while at the same time begging you to do a shimmy down the aisle. Cameron’s music means movement, and amidst the dancing, the audience is often belting right along with the lyrics.
When you ask Cameron Kelly a question, the answer is always love. For thirty years he’s put it into everything he does, both on and off the stage. When it comes to house music, his passion “goes beyond its bpm.” And when the music ends, Cameron hopes the audience feels the love and that they too will in some way share it in everything they do. Come welcome this national treasure to New Hampshire. Cameron is inspired by the people he meets along the way, so come meet this guy; word on the street is that he gives great hugs.

May 2024 Orbit Artist Spotlight:
Kid Ray
(AV Club)
Kid Ray has the “it factor.” The definition of that “it” can be found in everything he does: in the music he curates, in his performances behind the decks, and in his 30 years infusing the electronic scene with his forward-thinking, dynamic track selection. Influenced by his parent’s classical and latin jazz, Chris’s tech house, deep tech, and acid are filled with organic instruments, latin rhythms, and tribal percussion. But flowing throughout all of his music one thing is apparent; his education.
Chris was a regular at Boston’s The Loft in his early days, witnessing the budding careers of artists like Arman Van Helden and DJ Bruno. Amidst this birthplace of house in Boston, he found not only a place to focus his passion for music, but a place he felt at home. His jobs at numerous record shops in the city allowed him to show people good music, something he continues to do through his performances and contributions to the electronic scene. He says, “I do this for the right reasons. I want to play the music I love and give ears the opportunity to hear things they might not have heard before.”
Chris’s music, at times, will take you to a street corner in the city, and then immediately transport you to a yacht floating in the Keys. He curates tracks that pay homage to house’s beginnings, but that also bring new sounds and styles. His sets include soulful vocals, classic house progressions, and acid’s robot synths. He likes to start his sets with mellow sounds to provide a mood, but by the end his mixes take on energy; creating peaks and valleys that present a story only he can tell. Chris’s cornucopia of tracks may share common themes, but underneath all of it there are complex flavors. He says, “No matter what style it is, I want to share it with people.” His favorite moments are not necessarily when he plays, but when he’s simply a “part of it;” Not surprisingly, he points again to “it,” not only in regards to the music, but the unique culture that evolved in the rave scene.
For Orbit, you can expect Chris to share his eclectic taste with a mix of “it” tracks. You can expect Latin and tribal rhythms with a hint of acid, and music that will have you Shazaming without success. Kid Ray digs deep, and it’s most likely that you’ve never been as deep as he goes. Come to Orbit and experience the “it factor” Chris is well-known for providing. The dancefloor’s waiting; come and be a part of Kid Ray’s story.
