Yeast infections, also known as candidiasis, are quite common. They are caused by an overgrowth of a type of fungus called Candida, usually Candida albicans. These infections can occur in various parts of the body, but the most common type is va**nal yeast infection.

Here are 5 things you should know about yeast infections:

Prevalence: Vaginal yeast infections are very common. It’s estimated that around 75% of folks with va**nas will experience at least one va**nal yeast infection in their lifetime.

Risk Factors: Certain factors can increase the risk of developing a yeast infection. These include taking antibiotics, pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes, weakened immune system, hormonal changes (such as those during the menstrual cycle), and using oral contraceptives or corticosteroids.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Symptoms: Symptoms of a va**nal yeast infection typically include itching, burning, redness, swelling of the va**nal area, and a thick, white discharge resembling cottage cheese. A yeast infection on the p***s comes in the form of balanitis, which presents as redness, itching, and swelling on the head of the p***s.

Prevention: There are steps you can take to help prevent yeast infections, such as wearing breathable cotton underwear, avoiding tight-fitting clothing, practicing good hygiene, avoiding douching, and limiting the use of antibiotics when possible. What do you consider to be “taboo?” Although there are certainly some things that may fall into this category, seeking compassionate care and support for pelvic pain, incontinence, constipation, gender-affirming modalities and surgeries should not be one of them.

Look, I wish the monistat and fluconazole worked for me, and everyone for that matter. But the statistics don’t lie, neither does all the anecdotal evidence. The fact is resistance rates are up and medical communities believe overprescribing is a contributing factor. Which leaves many of us in pain with out a solution. ​​​​​​​​
