Shafia Monroe Consulting

Shafia Monroe is the Queen Mother of a midwife movement, a doula trainer, and a birth justice warrior My personal goal is to end human suffering.

I am a lover of people and see the best in each person that I meet. My seven children and my husband are the joys of my life. I've been teaching midwives, doulas, and birth workers for over four decades, focusing on African American birth traditions and postpartum rituals. I am a lifelong learner of organic gardening and herbal medicine. In 2002, I created the SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion

Deputy who killed Sonya Massey worked for 6 agencies in 4 years 07/24/2024

The murder of Sonya Massey, should not have happened. It’s good that the “Deputy Murder,” Sean Grayson, of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department is being held without bail. He is blatantly guilty. At the same time the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office must be held accountable for hiring a person, who had a resume of negativity, racism, sexism, and violence. He was dangerous and unfit when they hired him.

Deputy who killed Sonya Massey worked for 6 agencies in 4 years Sean Grayson was fired from the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office nearly two weeks after he shot and killed Massey in her home in Springfield, Illinois.

Delayed cord clamping at the minimum is one minute. As a midwife, I would cut the cord after the birth of the placenta.

Is “Bed Sharing” Beneficial and Safe during Infancy? A Systematic Review 07/14/2024

Bed Sharing and SIDS
Here is a reseach article that shows bed sharing is safe in Asian countries,https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1155/2014/468538
Mothers who exclusively breastfeed, didn't smoke (no w**d, or anything ) in pregnancy, or postpartum, do not consume alcohol, sleep alone with baby, no father/partner, toddlers, animals, extra pillows, excess blanket, a bed low to the floor, and a bed against the wall with mama, sleeping on the outside of the bed and baby on the inside of the bed, with a firm
mattress, has a low risk of SIDS. And when we read that Black families have a higher rate of SIDS, it is not genetics, unfortunately it is lifestyle and lack of knowledge.

Is “Bed Sharing” Beneficial and Safe during Infancy? A Systematic Review Background. There is conflicting evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of bed sharing during infancy—while it has been shown to facilitate breastfeeding and provide protection against hypothermi...

In Montana mountains Dandelions grow from one root and in clusters. In Oregon dandelions grow more individually. I love to learn how the species appears differently in different geographic locations, probably due to soil type, rain fall and sun intensity. I still chew the leaves straight off the plant, after my meal for digestion, if it is near me.

I was blessed to meet this Shoshoni jeweler maker in Wyoming, and I purchased these beautiful earrings. I also talked with her about the importance of bringing
their traditional midwifery back to their reservations, to save lives, as we African Americans are doing, and we have similar maternal mortality. She agreed.

Thank you all for the Happy Birthday well wishes. All your love and appreciation means so much to me. Thank you. Five years ago, I began a Black student midwife scholarship program, in honor of my midwife friend, Ayanna Ade, who transitioned on May 23, 2013. For my birthday would you make a scholarship donation of any amount for the 2024 scholarship award. This will be our sixth year awarding scholarships. And I need help to raise the scholarship fund. We need more Black midwives to reduce the maternal mortality rate in the US; where majority Black and Native women are dying.

You can donate here, https://shafiamonroe.com/donate/

Read about the scholarship here, https://shafiamonroe.com/scholarships/.

Please help by sharing the link.

Hands on midwifery care now and forever. Using a fetal scope to hear the unborn heart beat takes practice. You can learn this and you will be glad you did.

Two midwives with two fetal scopes. I prefer the fetal scope because unlike the Doppler, you hear inside the womb, making the heart beat, amniotic fluid and fetal movement, distinct and
realistic. always . .

It is crucial to spend time with the elderly members of your family to learn about your family history. By doing so, you will be able to gain a deeper understanding of your ancestors and the stories that have been passed down through generations. Take the opportunity to record these stories in a journal or on video to ensure that they are not lost over time. By preserving these stories, you will be able to honor your family's legacy and keep their memories alive.

Received a recognition for my pioneering work of training midwives and doulas yesterday, by The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, The House Representatives. I was honored to have Christopher J. Worrell, State Representative to award me this recognition. It means so much as MA, is my birth state. I am so appreciative. Thank you. Shafiamonroe.com.

We still live in a segregated America. And why is the question. We see it most in our public education systems, where we buy our food, air and water quality, and where we birth our babies, at low level hospitals or teaching hospitals. Segregation means lower quality of life for Black people, because the better options go to the white neighborhoods. We must continue to advocate for quality resources for Black neighborhoods, talking with our city councilors, state representatives, and commissioners and voting for those committed to equitable resources, and promoting cross pollinating of neighborhoods.
