Equity Discussion Group (EDG) is thrilled to announce our first virtual event for the school year! On Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 6 pm - 7:00 pm PST for Cultural Humility within Speech and Language with Meridith Heckler and Megal Magdaleno. Meridith and Megal both graduated from PSU with a M.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences.
This event will focus on sharing the general background on cultural humility; how cultural humility applies to speech and language; and what steps individuals can take to learn more, apply, and teach about cultural humility.
All PSU students and faculty are welcome and encouraged to join.

Congratulations to the the winner of the 2022 SPHR Diversity Scholarship, Diana Lopez!
Diana is a first-generation Mexican-American from Salinas California. She is interested in working with Spanish-speaking populations and providing services in underserved communities. Her primary interests lie in working with adult populations with cognitive communication disorders, swallowing disorders, and aphasia, though she maintains interest in clinical work with people across the lifespan.

You can now help the Aphasia Lab develop a computerized word-finding test! They're looking for people with aphasia due to left hemisphere stroke to participate in 2-3 sessions total for a NIH-funded study. The Gordon-Brannan Endowed Scholarship is named after long-time SPHR faculty member Mary Gordon-Brannan, who passed away in 2020. Mary taught at PSU for more than 30 years, influencing generations of members of our professional communities. Mary was particularly passionate about training SLPs for working in public school settings.
Congratulations to the winner of the 2022 Gordon-Brannan Scholarship, Cameron Levi Davis! Cameron has just completed their graduate program, having developed interests in AAC, school-age language development, and speech sound disorders. These interests have led them to their future clinical fellowship experience with an elementary school in the Salem-Keizer School District. Cameron's passions also include cooking, playing Dungeons & Dragons, and reading mystery novels.
Congratulations Cameron, and best of luck in your Clinical Fellowship!

Congratulations to Ruthie Aldrich, who also was awarded a Shari Kazdoy Memorial Scholarship this year! Ruthie is a first-year graduate student in SPHR. She plans to pursue a career in pediatric speech-language pathology with a focus on AAC, stuttering, articulation, and language disorders. One of her career goals is to become fluent in ASL.

Congratulations to Brighid Thomas, who was awarded a scholarship from the Shari Kazdoy Memorial Fund. This fund is named after audiologist Shari Kazdoy, a former SPHR faculty member who was killed by a drunk driver in 1986. The memorial fund established in her memory seeks to support students whose career plans include working with people in the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.
Brighid is a first-generation college student who earned a BA from PSU in 2012, with a focus on German, Applied Linguistics, and Anthropology, They returned in 2020 as a post-baccalaureate student studying ASL, Special Education, and SPHR. They are now preparing to move across the country to begin a Master's degree program at Gallaudet University, the only University in the world where all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Congratulations, Brighid, and best of luck in your next steps!

Each year, the Oregon Speech-Language & Hearing Association (OSHA) Education Foundation gives the Bob Buckendorf scholarship to one graduate student from each of Oregon's three Master's degree training programs in speech-language pathology.
We are proud to have Izela Michel as the winner of this award from the PSU class of 2022! Izela is a Mexican-American student in our Bilingual Concentration who will be completing her program next week! She has been the PSU graduate student representative to OSHA and she has served on the ASHA Hispanic Caucus. Her clinical interests include bilingual assessment and treatment and Childhood Apraxia of Speech. She is passionate about preserving heritage languages, breaking down cultural barriers, and mentoring future SLPs. She hopes to work with culturally and linguistically populations and under-resourced communities, and to merge her passions for clinical and policy work in the future.
Thank you for the many roles you have filled at PSU, Izela, and congratulations on this award!

The Pacific EarClinic (PEC) on the campus of Portland State University (PSU) is open for appointments! Hearing conservation is just one of the many services offered at the new PEC at PSU.

The Harrison-Edlefsen Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by PSU Alum Sandi-Jo Edlefsen in order to support future generations of students through their Master's program in SPHR.
Please join us in congratulating Megan Heath, winner of this year's Harrison-Edlefsen Scholarship! Megan is a first generation college student in the first year of her Master's program. She has a background working with preschool and early-elementary age children, and she is interested in pursuing a career in medical speech-language pathology with a variety of pediatric populations. She believes that a family-centered approach is essential to providing a supportive and enriching environment, and she has a particular interest in bilingual services.
