Congratulations to the 2021 Mattress Lot Scholars. Since 2015 Mattress Lot has awarded scholarships to outstanding Eastside Portland students. This year we awarded $10,000 in college aid to 7 amazing students.
They wrote essays describing their lives over the past eventful year. They spoke of living through Covid. Racial justice protests. Caring for family members with Covid. Job losses. Social isolation. Despite everything they endured, they all see a future filled with promise and hope.
Cecelia Wu earned our top honor, an $8000 scholarship. She’s going to Stanford University. During the pandemic her mom lost her restaurant job. Cecelia started a group helping Mandarin speakers navigate unemployment benefits.
Imara Moore from Jefferson High is going to Howard University. She earned $1000. She started a fashion blog/zine dedicated to young black women. There’s so much to celebrate here.
We are grateful for our community that supports our small business and makes it possible for us to give back so much. Congrats to the class of 2021 and thank you to our customers.
