Use caution on State Street this morning. PFD crews are on scene of a car fire!
In the early morning hours of Monday, January 30, Portland Fire Department crews responded to Apres on Anderson St. for a report of a sprinkler system water flow alarm. Upon arrival what they found was a couch that had been on fire that the building’s sprinkler system extinguished. The sprinkler system contained the fire to it area of origin and limited damage to the building so that the business was able to reopen later in the week. #fastestwater #sprinklersave

Yesterday we shared photos from Recruit Class 2022-31’s week long firefighter survival and rescue training. We wanted to share a video from that training and elaborate why a drill like this is performed. One of the scenarios the recruits were faced with this week was a “firefighter down in cardiac arrest”. This is a situation that we pray we never have to encounter, but the reality is that research shows us firefighters are more likely to suffer a cardiac event while or after performing firefighting activities. Roughly 45% of firefighter line of duty deaths in the United States are from cardiac events. High quality CPR is an influential component for survival from a cardiac event… this consists of chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 per minute, with a minimum compression depth of at least 2 inches and 80% or more of time spent on compressions. Performing CPR in a smoke and fire filled environment is not an option, therefore the only choice is rapid removal from the IDLH atmosphere so that high quality CPR can be initiated. In this drill, the downed firefighter is removed the by the recruits and as a team they worked to maintain chest compressions while simultaneously removing the firefighters mask, air pack and turnout gear.
