From Therese Flaherty:

As most of you know, I have Tim’s Memorial Blood Drive every December, in Yarmouth ( this past being the 12th one) ~ to keep his legacy alive and give the Gift of Life to someone in need. 🩸 In addition, I had one for his 65th birthday. Blood is SO critically needed NOW, so I am having one on July 10th, close to what would have been his 76th birthday ~ July 12th. With the many blood transfusions he received during his illness, he was able to be in our lives a little bit longer, because of the many people that donate. It costs you nothing and the feeling is so rewarding when you do! One unit of blood saves three lives! If you can, see the information below, or pm me and I will put you in the schedule. If you can’t, please spread the word! Thank you! Happy Heavenly 76th Birthday, Tim! ❤️ I’m sure he’s smiling knowing that so many people donate blood! 🩸

Fewer Maine babies are being born with substance exposure. No one’s sure why 06/17/2024

We have been lucky enough to partner with Alane O'Connor and the MaineHealth MaineMOMS program over the last year through our non-emergent outreach team, Mobile Medical Outreach. Alane is a wonderful provider that is making a difference and has brought a lot to our program and providers. Cheers Alane!

Fewer Maine babies are being born with substance exposure. No one’s sure why Hospital data show the lowest figures in a decade, but officials say changes in reporting could be skewing the results.

New device, medication help Maine paramedics improve baby delivery 06/11/2024

Thank you to Morgan Womack and the Portland Press Herald for this additional, in depth look at our provider's work in conjunction with Maine EMS, Maine DHHS, and Maine CDC in the area of field deliveries. These contributions to patient care can be seen in the City of Portland, Maine and across the state.

New device, medication help Maine paramedics improve baby delivery Former EMS protocol required paramedics to transport mothers and babies in separate ambulances. Now crews can carry them together, giving a mother and her child more time to connect.

Portland first responders are using a new device to transport newborns and mothers to the hospital 06/06/2024

Thank you Caroline LeCour and NEWS CENTER Maine for highlighting both our providers efforts and a piece of new equipment that makes transporting mom and baby safely together after a field delivery a reality.

Portland first responders are using a new device to transport newborns and mothers to the hospital The KangooFix device allows newborns to be strapped to their mother's chest and safely taken to the hospital in one ambulance, something deemed too dangerous before.

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the passing of Firefighter Stephen Pallotta, who lost his battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease. A devoted member of Engine Company 1 on Munjoy Hill, Stephen was a shining example of bravery and selflessness, and his dedication to his community was an inspiration to all who knew him. His memory will continue to be an enduring reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave first responders.

On Sunday we held our annual awards ceremony. We acknowledged all the wonderful accomplishments our department has had over the year.

We would like to highlight one award in particular, the Class A Merit Award. It has been since 2007 that a member of the PFD has received this award, and only the 8th time ever this department has bestowed this honor for actions taken at an emergency incident.

On November 11, 2023 our crews were dispatched to the report of a vehicle in the water at the Cutter Street boat ramp. Lt LaRou arriving on Rescue 1, entered the water and swam to the submerged vehicle. Lt Phillip LaRou was able to break the drivers side window, allowing access to and removal of the victim. These actions ultimately resulted in her survival.

Congratulations to Lt Phil LaRou.

Today, the Portland Fire Department celebrates its 256th birthday. Our inception date of March 29, 1768 stands amongst those of the oldest fire departments in the country and we have proudly operated since that date long ago. We look very different than we did in our infancy, growing with firefighting technology through hand pumps, steam engines, motorization, a marine division starting in 1894, Air Rescue firefighting starting in 1973, the addition of emergency medicine with MEDCu which originally started in 1975 and moved under the fire department umbrella in 1997, and all the specialized areas of response like HAZMAT, confined space, and technical rescue. We have done and continue to do so many different things serving the City of Portland over our considerably lengthy lifespan. Please join us in celebrating being 256 years young. Happy Birthday PFD!

ALERT: We are opening a temporary warming center for residents who are without power and need a warm place to visit, charge electronics, or sleep overnight. The warming center will be located at the East End Community School at 195 North Street and will be open from 5:00 PM Sunday, March 24 until 7:00 AM Monday, March 25.

People without transportation are encouraged to use Greater Portland Metro to travel to the warming center. The last bus that arrives at East End Community School is at 6:05 PM. Any elderly or disabled residents who would like to use the center, but cannot get there on their own should call RTP at 207-774-2666 (available through 9:00 PM). No fares will be charged for anyone traveling to the warming center. The City would like to remind residents to please check on any neighbors who may be elderly or physically challenged to ensure they are safe and warm if they do not have power.

Anyone planning to stay overnight should make sure they have any necessary clothing, medications, toiletries, and a sleeping bag and pillow with them. Unfortunately, pets cannot be accommodated.

According to Central Maine Power, there are roughly 15,400 customers in Portland without power.

Safety Reminders:

If you are using a generator, please remember to follow proper generator usage. https://www.portlandmaine.gov/278/Safety-Tips

If you observe a downed power line, report it to CMP. Citizens are reminded to never touch a downed power line or a tree in contact with a downed line. Motorists should slow down or change lanes when approaching utility crews working on roadways.

Other related tree damage from trees in the public way should be reported to City Forestry crews via our 311 tool, SeeClickFix. Residents can download the SeeClickFix mobile app or visit https://www.portlandmaine.gov/311. Residents are urged to provide as much detail as possible with pictures so crews know how to respond to each hazard.

Regional emergency shelters have opened in several Maine towns and counties. Please visit MEMA’s website to find out if emergency shelters open. You may also dial 2-1-1.

Check that carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are properly installed and replace the old batteries with new ones.

Do not use your cooking stove or oven to heat your house.

Owners and managers responsible for commercial properties equipped with sprinkler and standpipe systems should clear the fire department connections to these systems.
