Portsmouth Mayor Shannon E. Glover owns and operates Commonwealth Employee Benefits Solutions Inc., a Portsmouth small business providing human resources consulting for companies.
The Navy veteran is active in the community and serves on several boards and committees, including the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance, Hampton Roads Transit, Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, and the Hampton Roads Workforce Council.
Glover has been a longtime supporter and advocate for regional workforce development efforts and is a co-founder of the NextGen Regional Internship Program.
He is never shy about reaching out to the Workforce Council with an idea, a new partner suggestion, or a request to help a job seeker or employer in his city.

This training program is a preparation program providing Portsmouth residents with direct hiring opportunities with Portsmouth Public Works. Participants will receive certifications that will directly qualify them for direct employment, including Workplace Readiness, VDOT Flagger Certification, NIMS Incident Command System Certification, and application assistance. Participants must be 18 years of age or older, resident of Portsmouth, have at least a 10th-grade education, and demonstrate basic math and reading skills. Available positions are: Equipment Operator I Stormwater, Equipment Operator Assistant, and Grounds Maintenance (parttime).

Portsmouth At Work is looking to help young people gain job skills through a *NEW* program - Portsmouth YouthBuild.
Earn money while you learn - for a 6-month commitment.
The mission is to get at-risk youth off the streets and into classrooms to learn skilled trades like HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
Recruitment is open NOW until September 10, 2022
**Participants must be between the ages of 16 and 24 AND not enrolled in public school.
**Orientations and Interviews conducted in September 12-23

The Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Division held a graduation ceremony for students completing its Fire Youth Academy held August 15 – August 19. Participants were involved in several activities including fire behavior, fire prevention & safety, first aid/CPR, vehicle extraction, firefighting demonstrations, and emergency medical services. Congratulations to all the participants!

The 757th Airlift Squadron, from Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio, will conduct aerial mosquito spraying over Langley Air Force Base and Craney Island on the night of Wednesday, August 24th. In the event of a weather delay, the mission will be accomplished on Thursday, August 25th. The 757th AS flies U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules airlift aircraft is equipped with a Modular Aerial Spray System to complete their mission. These specially modified C-130s use global positioning and other accurate navigation systems to make sure that the spaying occurs only over designated areas. In addition, a technician monitors operations of the spray rate and flow, under direction of a 757th AS entomologist, to ensure accurate delivery.

Conducted earlier this week, WAVY spoke with members of the Southside Network Authority regarding the current status of the fiber optic ring project. The regional broadband plan encompasses a 119-mile loop of fiber optic cable that will connect transatlantic undersea cables. The project will provide the fastest broadband available on the east coast. Portsmouth’s community broadband network will include connections to community anchor institutions such as hospitals, higher education centers, and will serve as a catalyst to narrow the digital divide and regional broadband initiatives.
