“L” is for low muscle tone

Low muscle tone is also known as hypotonia, and it refers to muscles that could be considered “floppy.” Children with low muscle tone typically have increased flexibility, poor endurance, and may have postural control issues. Low muscle tone impacts many areas of development, including fine and gross motor skills, mobility, feeding difficulties, and more. Occupational therapists can provide graded activities to promote the gradual development of strength and endurance to promote increased independence in daily life activities.

Continuing OT month with "K" for Kinesthetic Awareness!
Kinesthetic awareness is similar to proprioception. It is a person's awareness of movement such as awareness of movement speed, force, position.
We use Kinesthetic Awareness when interacting with others, performing daily activities, coloring, writing, and painting among many many other typical activities! For example, the kiddos in this graphic are using their Kinesthetic Awareness while they give each other a high five! They are aware of how much pressure and how fast, they should apply force with their hand to give a high five to their partner!

04/13/2021

“J” is for joint compression!

Joint compression is the application of repeated pressure to the joints. This pressure provides sensory input to the proprioceptive receptors in the body to create a calming effect. Joint compression assists in self regulation, body awareness, mobility, and strength.

04/12/2021

“I” is for interoception!

Interoception is one of the lesser known senses! It describes our ability to help us feel what is going on inside of our body. Some examples include knowing when we need to use the bathroom or when we are hungry or thirsty. Occupational therapists can assist clients develop greater body awareness and help them learn how to achieve a more balanced state.

We are loving doing the for OT month!

“G” is for grading!

Occupational therapists use a process called grading to make tasks easier or more challenging in order to meet the “just right” challenge. This enables clients to make functional gains while enhancing their unique abilities.

Today we are continuing the ABCs of OT to celebrate OT month! We took Sunday off to celebrate the Easter holiday.

Our letter of the day is "D" for "Dynamic" and "Domain". Occupational therapists are trained to look at the dynamic interralatedness of the 5 aspects of the occupational therapy domain: occupation, context, client factors, performance skills, and performance patterns. The occupational therapist recognizes that each aspect of the occupational therapy domain impacts the dymanic mind-body-spirit connection which is vital for meaningful engagement and participation in every day life. Each evaluation, treatment plan, and treatment session is individualized for the dynamic interactions of each aspect of the client to foster overall well-being, life participation, identity, and overall health.

04/04/2021

To continue the ABCs of OT...

“C” is for CLIENT-CENTERED!

Occupational therapists take a unique client-centered approach when providing services to ensure that the client’s priorities and needs/wants are met. Our purpose is to help clients have meaningful engagement in their chosen occupations, which consist of anything that someone wants or needs to do on a daily basis!

04/03/2021

Today we are continuing our celebration of Occupational Therapy Month with our ABCs of OT!
Our letter of the day is B for BALANCE!

Occupational therapy practitioners are skilled to address many aspects of balance including physical and occupational balance.

•Dynamic Balance is the physical ability to maintain balance during movement. Occupational therapy practitioners assess and provide strategies to improve dynamic balance while sitting throughout all areas of occupation (reaching for a toy while sitting without falling out of their chair, balancing to complete toilet hygiene) and while standing (reaching for objects, navigating their environment without stumbling or falling)

•Occupational Balance is one's ability to balance all aspects of life, or occupations, without one area taking over. Does the person have adequate leisure time? Do they have a hobby, fulfilling activities to fill free time? Are they able to participate in their leisure activities, or do other aspects such as work or school take up this time? On the other hand, is the person able to fulfill work, self care and school roles? Occupational balance is the ability to balance each of these areas without the person being overwhelmed, or underwhelmed in any one area.

Whether it is physical balance, or occupational balance, occupational therapists are trained to assess and promote balance for overall physical and emotional well-being of our clients!

April is Occupational Therapy month!

To celebrate, we will be participating in the “ABCs of OT” where we post something related to occupational therapy every day, starting with “A” and ending with “Z”!

A is for ADAPT!

Occupational therapists are trained in activity analysis, which enables them to break down the specific demands of an activity and the skills required to complete said activity. In some cases, adaptations may be required to help a person have meaningful participation in a chosen activity. Adaptations may include adaptive equipment or assistive technology. Occupational therapy is all about helping people achieve meaningful and successful participation in their daily occupations!
