I will be uploading a step by step tutorial for how to draw this precious newborn in colored pencil within the next week.For the pencils, I used the Caran D'Ache Luminance Portait pencil set. They were purchased through www.dickblick.com website. The paper is Strathmore 300 series Bristol Smooth paper. This tutorial will be the first in series of realistic portrait drawings for my new patreon account. watercolor for last nights practice. I was able to video my in process painting and was able to condense two hours of work into a minute and a half😳. Gina Carano’s character, Cara Dune in the Mandolorian, was one of my favorite. It was such an honor to create her likeness in paint. I am a fan of her and the courage she is showing standing up for what she believes in. I will upload the time lapse painting a little later today (I apologize for my hair and head making their appearance towards the end).

Fun artwork update. The second photo was a watercolor I painted for my grandma when I was 12! She asked me to update it for her which is such a huge honor. Finished Jaxon’s portrait! My second watercolor portrait using the new techniques I learned. I see the areas that work and those that can improve but overall I’m super happy with how he turned out. Hope you all had a blessed Easter.

Almost done with Jax’s face in this watercolor. I am learning a lot with how the paint mixes on the paper and what does and doesn’t work. I may go darker in the background but need to get a feel for the rest of the skin tone. I am hoping with more practice I can get a better feel for smoother skin tone. Hope you all have a blessed Friday. Going to enjoy pizza with my kids❤️

Up next... hehe well my next watercolor painting is set up on the easel. I absolutely love the color orange and always have for as long as I can remember. I was soo happy when I found this acid free tape from my favorite art store Dick Blick. I ordered it right away to use to secure my watercolor paper. I use Arches 300 on paper and have enjoyed the texture of the paper and the durability it provided. This painting of my youngest son will be an exercise in skin tone and painting with watercolors vertically like Mary Whyte. If you haven’t seen any of her work, I would encourage you to take the time to google her name or look on Amazon for her Veterans in watercolor series. I have two of her books and am hoping to add to my collection. Do any of you have a favorite artist? I also have favorite colored pencil artist as well and am hoping to add to my other mediums.

I just finished my “How Sweet It Is” watercolor painting. This is my first large scale watercolor painting using the techniques I learned from dvd. I highly recommend her teaching for those who want to learn how to use watercolors to create realistic skin color. I will have sooo much to learn but I am super happy with how this artwork came out. The reference photo is one I took of my fifth child. I absolutely love how the light captured the brilliance of his eyes. I can’t wait to start my next painting.

These would be great homeschool lesson for the spring or for your fall semester, or to learn a new skill as an adult. Work in progress on my first large scale watercolor painting!!! I watched a dvd by I purchased online. She is amazing in her use of color and the fact she paints with her paper vertical☺️ I love this idea and find it helps so much with getting the right proportions. Cant wait to see how this turns out.

A behind the scenes look at my studio! I have these big lights set up for future art tutorial videos but normally I just have my smaller daylight lamp. My husband made me a little art studio in our basement a few years ago and thankfully I am still able to use it.

It is a lot of work to create a blurry background with only pencils. I sometimes use mineral spirits (paint thinner) to smooth out the pencils to save my hand but this time I wanted to only use pencils. This took roughly 4 hours for this section above the lion. I will be finishing the background before I work anymore on the lion to help give me reference for the colors to use in the fur. What do you think so far? Here is my latest work in progress on my lion drawing. I am trying to incorporate neutral grays into the areas on the face that are further back to help give the illusion of depth. I have been learning a bit about color theory for my watercolor painting and wanted to try some of what I learned in my drawing. I recently purchased a dvd by that shows you how to paint a portrait with watercolor. I am attempting to incorporate her tips into my colored pencil art. Unfortunately, the dvd is no longer in production. My prayer is that one day to attend her portrait class in person, but for now, I am rewatching the dvd and enjoying her teaching style. What art medium/style are you pursuing? Do you have a favorite artist?

Latest drawing on my desk. A colored pencil male lion that has been sitting around for a while in my little studio. Hoping I can finish him this week and start becoming more active in my artwork. I have a dry medium area and an area where I paint. How many of you work in multiple mediums?

Work in progress on a lovely Raven watercolor. I am taking online classes from and am enjoying his painting style. I still have so much to learn but so far it’s a fun experience. I am using my #6 cats tongue brush to do a majority of the background. I am looking forward to the final piece and hoping I do it justice.
