ElfQuest® the official page

In 1981, Warp Graphics licensed the Donning/Starblaze publishing company to produce collected color editions of ElfQuest's Original Quest series. There were four books, each collecting five issues of the comic. This provided an avenue of distribution into all the big chain bookstores of the time (remember Waldenbooks?) and ElfQuest became the first graphic novel series to make it big in the mass market outside of comic book shops.

This is Wendy Pini's cover art for Book 2 in that series, published in 1982. The piece is featured in The Art of ElfQuest by Flesk Publications with additional details from Wendy and Richard Pini.

"Upon the prehistoric World of Two Moons, the High Ones crash-land in a crystalline vessel. Exiles from their distant Starhome, the delicate elfin spacefarers scatter - and some learn the harsh ways of survival from forest-dwelling wolves."

This painting by Wendy Pini was first published in the ElfQuest "Greatest Moments" Calendar in 2000. It is also featured in "The Art of ElfQuest" by Flesk Publications with additional commentary from Wendy and Richard Pini.

Here's the really freaky part. The author's name is Timothy Donohoo. Back in 1978, Independent Publishers Syndicate published the first appearance of ElfQuest in Fantasy Quarterly #1 - and then tried to not pay us and steal Wendy's original art. They didn't get away with it, I saw to that. The guy who ran IPS was Tim Donohoe. Sometimes the universe gets beyond weird.
