Though babies are typically in the womb with their eyes closed, they do begin to open them around the 26th week of pregnancy. At this stage, the eyelids, which have been fused together, start to separate, allowing the baby to open their eyes for short periods. While the vision is still quite limited—mainly perceiving light and dark—this development is an important part of their sensory growth.

By the third trimester, the baby’s eyes are fully formed and can even blink, which helps prepare them for life outside the womb. This early eye-opening process is a fascinating glimpse into the baby’s development and readiness for the world they will soon enter.
