The new year brings the promise of new beginnings and adventures. We are lucky to live in the Hudson Valley where no matter your resolutions for the year to come, you can find it here. If your goal this year is to take in more art and culture, our region is home to many beautiful and historic museums, galleries, theaters, colleges, libraries, and gardens. What many people may not be aware of is the incredible free access to art from antiquity to present at The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. The current exhibit on view through January 28, Silver Linings: Celebrating the Spelman Art Collection, uplifts the legacy of artists of African descent spanning the 20th century through the contemporary moment, many of whom have been overlooked by mainstream art museums.

I blinked and 2024 is just around the corner. It’s this time of year when we look back on all we have accomplished, the places we’ve traveled, and the people we have spent time with. The new year is when we list our aspirations for the future in the form of resolutions, wishes, and intentions. A few years ago, I changed the way I look at the new year. Instead of making specific tasks or resolutions for the upcoming year, I find a word that embodies my goals for the year ahead. This word guides me throughout the year as I make decisions. I was introduced to this practice by attending Kakizome at Arts Mid-Hudson.

The Japanese express their hopes for the new year with kakizome, the ritualized first calligraphy writing of the year. Kakizome or “first writing” takes place within the first few days of the year. Traditionally this was written in a poetic calligraphic form expressing hopes and aspirations for the coming year, which were later burned to seal the fate of the hope.

There is a popular debate between family, friends and almost everyone I know - when is the appropriate time to start listening to holiday music? Some people start decorating and getting into the festive mood immediately after Halloween. Others wait until after Thanksgiving or wait until December. Whatever your preference, there is something about holiday music that warms our hearts and prepares us for the season of giving. Saturday, December 9, get in the holiday spirit with the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) as they perform “Season of Light” at Mount Saint Mary College’s Aquinas Hall starting at 4:00 p.m.
