It is with great sadness that I share with you, the extended Powerhouse family, that our dear friend, Mateo Ervin (Acting Apprentice, 2011) passed away on August 4, 2023. After studying with us his first summer, we were lucky enough to have Mateo work on the staff of Powerhouse in the years that followed, even returning as a “Dandy Minion” in Taylor Mac’s A 24-Decade History of Popular Music. In the words of his wife, Lizzy Ana Lincoln, “He is survived by his parents, brother, sister in law, and numerous former foster cats...[and]... It is in the love between us that he survives.” Our thoughts and love are with Lizzy and the rest of his family in this difficult time.
I first met Mateo at the NETC auditions in the spring of 2011. He came to our “call back,” our little table in a large meeting room. He sat and listened and asked questions. He was so earnest. Luckily for us he accepted our offer to join the program. He would spend that summer absorbing everything like a sponge! Getting over his fear of Shakespeare in Brian McManamon’s Text Class, discovering a brand new language (Soundpainting) with Mark Lindberg and learning to “dream” into Strindberg’s A Dream Play by way of Caryl Churchill under the thoughtful direction of Jessi Hill. Mateo absorbed everything Powerhouse had to offer. At Mateo's invitation I went to recruit at his school, Austin College, in Sherman, Texas. He introduced me to his friends, his teachers, and his favorite roadside restaurant complete with a “smoking section.” I had heart shaped chicken fried steak (or was it chicken fried chicken?). His friends, all of whom seemed to find their way to Powerhouse over the next few summers - Harrison, Nick, Anika, Colin, Lizzy - all came to Powerhouse because of Mateo. My heart breaks for their loss.
And, Lizzy, dear sweet lovely Lizzy Ana Lincoln. My heart breaks for you, especially. We lost a light too soon. But you? You lost your play-mate, your buddy, your pal.
Mateo touched so many here at Powerhouse, a web of connection only those who have experienced it can understand. Mateo is part of the Powerhouse DNA and part of so many lives and the proof of that lies in all the calls and emails and text messages I have received.
At the end of his first summer at Powerhouse, he posted to the Facebook group: “You people. You wonderful, passionate, talented, completely batsh*t insane people. I miss you dearly.” (August 4, 2011)
We will miss you dearly. Rest in peace, dear sweet, earnest, funny, thoughtful Mateo.
