When you are part of a marginalized community, it can be really hard to access medical care. When it comes to health screenings, a safe, inclusive environment can make all the difference. Getting regular screening mammograms can be a really difficult for individuals with gender dysphoria or history of trauma in the medical system. Our awesome inclusive team at wants to try to make this better. Find a friend and come get your screening on August 3rd!

We love when there are new options to manage medical conditions in pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is a tough diagnosis for many to manage. It means changing diet, checking blood and sometimes medications.

We are so excited that dexcom-a glucose monitoring patch has been approved for diabetes in pregnancy! We met the rep to learn more about how it works and even tested it out on ourselves! If you are struggling with checking blood sugars in pregnancy, ask your team if this is an option! A few of our patients have been able to use this!

That last screenshot is what rice did to Dr A’s blood sugar 😬

Today a pregnant patient’s support person thanked me for talking to them. Seriously, just appreciated sitting down and talking to them. She was a new transfer to the practice, and sent by her doula to our practice late in her second trimester.

We’ll never improve pregnancy and birth trauma if patients don’t feel heard. If we can’t communicate for the easy questions about back pain and TDAP, how can we communicate during the hard stuff?

Did you feel heard?

This is not how we improve maternal health.

Another hospital in KC closes its maternity services. The maternal mortality statistics in the US are the lowest of any first world country. Limiting services and creating maternity care desserts will not help us climb out of this.

We get it. We don’t make money for the hospitals like other services do so they often can’t afford to keep open. Our system is broken and the health of children and women is undervalued. We need a big change in our system to improve these statistics.

She’s responsible for making so many improvements to our practice and helped make our team more cohesive!

Thank you for all you do, Jennifer!

Happy Nurses week to our second Morgan!

She is always the voice of calm and reason in our office and so nurturing to everyone around her—patients, other staff and those lovely plants she works so hard to keep alive (and bring back to life when the rest of us kill them). She’s often caught in the crossfire of pranks and takes it with grace 🤣. We are so lucky to have her on our team!

Drop a comment below to show Morgan some love for nurses week!

When Morgan isn’t providing compassionate care, she’s busy making diamond art like the piece she’s standing next to! Shes a busy mom, in the season of life with little kids and gives her all at home and work!

Happy nurses week, Morgan! Leave her some love below!

Today on International Bereaved Mother’s Day, we support mothers who have lost a child and acknowledge the profound grief of losing a child, no matter the circumstances. We honor and remember your babies. We honor your motherhood.

Losing a child is one of the most devastating experiences a mother can go through. It can be a lonely and isolating experience, as many people do not know how to support someone who is grieving the loss of a child. International Bereaved Mother’s Day, celebrated yearly on the first Sunday in May, allows mothers to connect with others who have gone through similar experiences, share stories, and offer comfort and support.

Carly Marie, who organized the first International Bereaved Mother’s Day in 2010, wrote about the day's importance: “The traditional Mother’s Day has proven to be an emotionally exhausting day for so many mothers around the world. Just because your child died does not mean that you are not a mother anymore. You are your child’s mother forever, and people need to start recognizing this fact. On Bereaved Mother’s Day each year, we come together to celebrate our connection, our babies and children, and our hope for the future.”

Learn more about this day and how to get involved or support bereaved mothers in your life by following Pregnancy After Loss Support or reading: https://pregnancyafterlosssupport.org/international-bereaved-mothers-day/ #:~:text=International%20Bereaved%20Mother's%20Day%20is,child%2C%20no%20matter%20the%20circumstances.

A patient who recently had a c-section said it was a very healing experience for her. What I didn’t expect was how healing it could be for her partner, too. He talked about all of the anxiety and unknown about how the last one went. They knew a labor that could end in another unpredictable c-section wasn’t right for their family.

There are things that can be done during a c-section to make it less traumatic and this couple did the work to make their expertise healing.

Some things they did— used a clear drape, delayed cord clamping, skin to skin in the OR, taking photos, having music and even just asking questions. Communication about what’s going on can really help, too.

Did you have a healing birth? What did you find helpful?

04/29/2024

This post dedicated to the excellent boy band c-section playlist today.

Also a good reminder to add c-section birth preferences to your birth plan. Or to make a birth plan for your c-section. There are so many choices in birth and taking the lead can be so empowering and healing.

Lala Kent, from Vanderpump rules is expecting baby #2 through intrauterine insemination with donor s***m!

She is has been going through an ugly custody battle with her ex, and decided she wanted to expend her family. She knew she wasn’t in a place to do so with another partner, and decided to move forward on her own—with an excellent support system!

Speaking about her journey publicly must be extremely difficult, but it’s so important to raise awareness. It’s amazing to be living in a time when there are so many ways to grow your family.

Happy Friday! Have you ever seen a more perfect bow on a baby’s head! Shes all style and so lucky to have such a strong mama.

It is National Infertility Awareness week!

Infertility affects 1:6 worldwide? That number doesn’t include LGBTQ or people who chose to be a parent without a partner and may need assisted reproductive services.

Infertility is technically 1 year of unprotected in*******se without spontaneous conception, however a year is a LONG time to wait when you are ready to grow your family. If you are worried about your fertility there is a lot we can do to help! Speak up and talk to the politicians who represent you! In the US there many areas are at risk or have lost reproductive services and we deserve better.

We aren't 'listening to T. Swift at work'..... We are examining a musically interpreted anthology written by Dr. Taylor Alison Swift, seeking to glean profound wisdom to impart upon our audience, who, according to statistics, are also engaging with the same collection of melodic literature.

Presented herein are our professional analyses of 'The Tortured Poets Department' pertaining to public safety:

1. Fortnight - "I wanna kill her" - Murder is illegal.
2. The Tortured Poets Department - "Throwing spikes in the road" - We can, you can't.
3. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys - "Stole my tortured heart" - Theft is illegal. Torture is creepy... but also illegal.
4. Down Bad - "wakin' up in blood" - Please seek medical attention.
5. So Long, London - "I stoppеd CPR, after all, it's no use" - Please do not stop CPR until you call 911 and EMS arrives on scene to take over.
6. But Daddy I Love Him - "I'd rather burn my whole life down" - Arson is illegal.
7. Fresh Out the Slammer - "Frеsh out the slammer / I know who my first call will be to" - It's important to support your loved ones after a release from jail, empowering them to make decisions to positively impact their future.
8. Florida!!! - "And my friends all smell like w**d" W**d is still illegal in Kansas.
9. Guilty as Sin? - "They're gonna crucify me anyway" - Crucifixion is illegal.
10. Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? - "The bullet had just grazed" - You should call 911.
11. I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) - "Trust me, I can handle me a dangerous man" - Define ‘dangerous’........ Then probably reconsider.
12. loml - "When your impressionist paintings of heaven turned out to be fakes" - The sale of counterfeit merchandise is illegal.
13. I Can Do It With A Broken Heart - "I'm sure I can pass this test" - saying, "I couldn't even pass this test if I was sober..." won't help you pass a test if you're stopped for drunk driving.
14. The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived - "You tried to buy some pills / From a friend of friends of mine" - Selling or possessing controlled substances is illegal, even if it's from friends of friends.
15. The Alchemy - "He jokes that "It's he**in, but this time with an E" - He**ine is ok. He**in is not. (This song is totally about Travis btw)
16. Clara Bow - "Half moonshine, a full еclipse" - We hope you kept your eclipse glasses from last week.
17. The Black Dog - "And pierce new holes in my heart" - Stabbing is illegal.
18. imgonnagetyouback - "Gonna smash up your bike, I haven't decided yet" - Property damage is illegal. Pro tip: decide against it.
19. The Albatross - "You're in terrible danger" - Call 911 and get the heck outta there.
20. Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus - "And you just watched it happen" - Please report witnessed crimes to police as soon as a possible. (... did we hear someone say.... Sam?)
21. How Did It End? - "We must know / How did it end?" - Our new Investigations motto.
22. So High School - "Are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me?" - That escalated quickly. Refer to #1.
23. I Hate It Here - "Now I seem to be scared to go outside" - Clearly not a song about Spring Hill. We work hard to keep it safe around here.
24. thanK you aIMee - "And it wasn't a fair fight or a clean kill" - Refer to #22...
25. I Look in People's Windows - "I look in people's windows / In case you're at their table" - You're under arrest, Peeping Tom.
26. The Prophecy - "I'm so afraid I sealed my fate" - Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
27. Cassandra - "So they filled my cell with snakes" - There are no snakes at the Johnson County Detention Center, promise.
28. Peter - "And I won't confess" - You have the right to remain silent...
29. The Bolter - "But it always ends up with a town car speeding" - Speeding is illegal.
30. Robin - "Out window panes talking utter nonsense" - We can tell when you're lying to try to get out of a ticket.
31. The Manuscript - "Lookin' backwards / Might be the only way to move forward" - We all make mistakes; the measure of a person is how they move forward after learning from them.

Thanks for coming to our TayTalk.

(p.s. you can listen to the 122-minute album 5.9 times during a 12-hour shift.)

It’s Black Maternal Health Week.
Just last month we had a black maternal death in KC. This is not okay. We don’t know the details of what happened, but we do know the statistics. Black women are 2-3 times more likely to die in pregnancy, systemic racism is a factor and if not addressed, we won’t make this better. Individualize care, trust women.

The theme for Black Maternal Health week is “Our Bodies still belong to us, Reproductive Justice Now!”
