Meet Miss Mary!

Miss Mary loves people, and she loves to play, imagine and be outside. She knows that rocks tell stories and that the universe is endless. The sky is always there. She loves to watch sunrises and sunsets, especially at solstices and equinoxes. She grew up in Prescott and Tucson, and her favorite places to play are in sand and water. She fished in Lynx Lake when she was 7 and the lake was only 17 years old. Her world travel adventures began when she lived in Germany, and she hopes to get back to Peru and Iceland to explore more. Miss Mary is the mother of three amazing young men and the grandmother of three brilliant humans. She likes to bake (and eat) homemade gingerbread houses. She is one of the people who helped start La Tierra, and she thinks it is a miracle that she gets to work with the lovely, brilliant humans that learn with our unique school family. 🪨🌅🌲🌎

What a fantastic school math night!

We had a blast playing games like Place Value Battleship, Math Dice, Domino Parking Lot, and Go Fish Tens. It’s amazing how much fun you can have with just a deck of cards and a few dice. 🃏🎲 Math truly is more exciting when you make it a game! Thanks to everyone who joined in the fun and helped inspire our future generation!

Meet Ms. Reynolds!! 🪶🪶

She started teaching at LTCS in 2012. Ms. Cyndi Reynolds was born and raised in California and moved to Prescott in 2008 (she may have started the trend). Cyndi stayed in Arizona because of her love of the gorgeous sunsets, peaceful trails, and beautiful people! This human and her dog (Moby) love spending time outdoors, exploring the lakes and mountains with child-like awe of our beautiful landscape. She is constantly trying to teach her 4-legged canine son the ethics of care that La Tierra teaches to the students. (Unfortunately, Moby still is dedicated to digging up gophers, chasing lizards, and playing with little black and white stinky cats.) Ms. Reynolds is a nut for wild birds and believes they have stories to teach us about how to walk, waddle, and fly through life with peace and purpose.

La Tierra is like a chosen family to Cyndi, who always finds comfort, acceptance, and connection among the staff and families who have passed through our front gates. Forever feeling like a student of life, Ms. Reynolds has so much to learn from her friends at La Tierra, both young and old. Stop by, say hello, and get a hug or smile from the Special Education Director/Teacher in the little room down the hall. She will be so happy to see you!

Dreaming of slot canyons 🏜

Swipe to see some highlights from Miss Sam’s 7th & 8th grade end of year camping trip last May, where they took an epic descent into the breathtaking slot canyons of Utah.

From the moment they descended into those narrow passageways full of twists and turns, the excitement and awe in their eyes was simply priceless! Every moment was filled with laughter, teamwork, and a sense of wonder that only nature can inspire.

Here’s to our fearless explorers! Just another thing that makes La Tierra a magical place to learn!

Welcome to our meet the teacher series! What better way to start than with the founder of La Tierra! Meet Mr Dave …

Mr. Dave was born and raised in Arizona. He loves the natural beauty of Arizona and believes in sharing his passion for wilderness and open spaces with his students. David was the founding teacher of La Tierra Community school and he finds deep satisfaction working with the young people of today, who are growing to be the world runners of tomorrow. David and his his wife Erica have six children who have all almost grown up and are out in the world. He also lives with four dogs, two cats and a changing number of chickens. Being outside and listening are important to David. He loves the outdoors so much that a few years ago he and his brother camped for ten days in the middle of July in Death Valley. “Nature always has something to share, but you have to be there to experience it.” David likes to be there.

It's camping season at La Tierra and our third graders just returned from their trip to Tucson, culminating their studies of habitats and adaptations (with a special focus on frogs and amphibians). They visited Biosphere 2 and learned about the different environmental support systems needed for biomes to survive in miniature fog desert, mangrove wetlands, savanna grassland, ocean, and rainforest habitats. Next, they learned about cacti and ecosystems in Saguaro National Park where they earned their junior ranger badges. Later, they had a photo scavenger hunt in search of different plant and animal life and got to see some cool reptiles and tadpoles while exploring a stream. Finally, they got to visit the Sonoran Desert Museum to explore a variety of plants and animals within various habitats.

Prescott received little snow accumulation last night however today's forecast continues to call for heavy snowfall mid-day, low temperatures and high winds. With our community's safety at the forefront of our minds we have made the decision to call a full school day closure today. As the winter storm warning is in effect until 11PM this means we will also be postponing our Valentines Dance scheduled for this evening. We will keep you updated once it has been rescheduled. Please be safe if you have to leave your home today and enjoy the snow.

LTCS will be on a 2 hour delay for tomorrow, February 8. Current forecasts predict a second significant storm, with 6-8 inches of snow possible during the school day tomorrow. We will continue monitoring the forecast. Unless there is a significant snow forecast change by 7:00 a.m., the chances are quite high of another school cancellation tomorrow due to predicted weather and road conditions. We will provide an updated notice by 7:30am tomorrow. Stay safe!!

The City of Prescott has been diligently working to clear all of the main arteries in town and have started working on residential streets. According to the Public Works department "Temperatures are forecast to be in the mid to low teens in the early morning hours Monday, and this will create hazardous driving conditions for the morning commute. If you must travel please do so with extreme caution!". Due to this we WILL be having a 2 hour delay to the start of our day tomorrow. The playground will open at 930 with school starting at 10. As always please make the decision of when or if to drive based on the road conditions in your area.Be safe and we will see you tomorrow!
