Happy Summer Solstice!
Solstices and equinoxes mark the four movements in a celestial score. The older I get, the more I aspire to tap into the symphonic song of nature. To harmonize with the flow of seasons, the cycles in our landscapes, and the larger universe. This year, on June 20, Summer Solstice arrives in the Northern Hemisphere. Summer Solstice marks the time of the longest day and the beginning of summer. Where I live, it ushers in prime growing weather and a magnificent rush of flowers and produce to enjoy and share. In centuries past, Midsummer’s Eve was seen as one of the times that the fairies were supposed to come out and dance. Today a fairy house movement plays off this theme, inviting children lost in the pretend world of blue screens to take a closer look at nature and play for free in an outdoor world of imagination. For families it’s a time of garden salads, strawberry shortcake, picnics, and summer vacation.
Gardeners and farmers are perhaps tied to these cycles as much as any of us can be, living in the modern world. And as a gardener still crafting a life and livelihood from the land, I am touched and heartened by our human impulse to mark the seasons together with earthly and celestial rites and rituals that help us celebrate our circles around the Sun.

Happy May/May Day/Beltane/Bealtaine! 🌸🌼🌿
In the temperate reaches of the western world, the medicinal hawthorn is the patron tree of May. Snowy white blossoms cluster along each branch, evoking pure spring enchantment. Gathering the boughs and blooms has long been known as "going a-maying".
Hawthorns are also said to mark the territory of the Fay, or faerie folk, according to the ancient lore of the British Isles. Anyone daring enough to approach a tree in bloom might ask the tree for a blessing...at the risk of being whisked away by the faeries themselves!
If you do make a wish this May, be sure to leave an offering in its place—tying a colored ribbon onto one of the tree's branches is traditional.
Hawthorn blossoms and leaves are one of our most tender remedies for grieving hearts, painful losses, and deep emotional aches. They can be combined with mimosa flowers and lavender for a big heart hug.

Astragalus root is one of the most commonly used herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), often to support the immune system and strengthen the body during difficult times. Recent research suggests astragalus may be helpful for people with colorectal cancer. In looking at the use of astragalus-based Chinese medicine along with chemotherapy in patients with colorectal cancer, a meta-analysis found that the combination of the two improved tumor response and overall quality of life. Astragalus-based medicine and chemotherapy also helped ease the negative effects of chemo-induced nausea, diarrhea, anemia, and liver and kidney problems. Given the safety of astragalus (often cooked in soups) and the significant side effects of chemotherapy, this is definitely something patients should discuss with their oncologist. When I first started down my spiritual path to enlightenment, I first wanted to know...What is the difference between MEDITATION and PRAYER?
Along with looking up YouTube videos of guided meditations and trying different ones until I found what worked best for me (THERE ARE SO MANY), I also found this explanation helpful.
A mental PRAYER is a form of self-reflection using certain themes that allow the person to free himself from external attachments and draw his consciousness inwardly or to a more subtle level. This is part of MEDITATION.
A nonverbal PRAYER is no longer prayer in the usual sense. There is no desiring, there is no effort, just silent communion with the Divine. The extended effort of this state is identical with MEDITATION.
My hope is that this helps just one person feel better able to decide what will help them with their daily practice and further their spiritual growth. You are not alone.
