A little Pi (Pie) Day fun... found at Johnson & Wales University in the museum's online collections database records.
Happy Pi (Pie) Day! We found "acute" Pie Marker in the collection of the Culinary Arts Museum.
Call us irrational, but while it is a great way to make sure your slice has all the right angles, we suggest measuring with your heart.
You can find this marker plus other pie artifacts in the Culinary Arts Museum collection at https://culinaryartsmuseum.pastperfectonline.com/webobject/FB7C0683-3944-419C-BFE8-266649219472

CAM student assistant Evan Pedneault has spent the semester cataloging the Hartman Collection of travel and cruise line memorabilia. He is now working on an exhibit update for our Food on the Move exhibit. He brings experience from his studies in the College of Hospitality Management as well as museum background working for the New England Air Museum while in high school. Yesterday JWU’s College of Food Innovation & Technology hosted their first annual FIT Symposium at the Innovation Hub. The lively conversation and panel discussion focused on the transformative year the industry has experienced, the road ahead, and the critical role a strong education foundation plays within the food industry.
It’s a busy day at the museum with socially distanced study sessions underway to wrap-up the first half Spring semester classes and faculty research afoot for instructional videos. Thanks to Chefs Dion, Armstrong, and Ricci for making use of CAM’s resources! (CUL1410) JWU Providence
Our founders Gertrude Johnson and Mary Wales blazed a trail of great accomplishments for women at JWU. In recognition of International Women's Day, we celebrate them and the thousands of women who followed, including those who are among our students, faculty and staff today.

Members of our Johnson & Wales University community, from our trustees, faculty, staff, and students to our 100,000-plus alumni across the world as well as our extended friends and family have been deeply impacted by the tragic deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and all people of color who have lost their lives to police brutality and other acts of violence. There is no immediate action that can extinguish the racial divide in our nation that has been present for centuries. In time and with your commitment, we can all work together to create everlasting change.
Black lives do matter. I am proud to stand as a part of our JWU community as we recognize and acknowledge that JWU black and brown students face fear, oppression and racism every day. We will listen, learn and ensure our students are heard, respected and feel welcome at JWU.
In the weeks and months ahead, our voices will inform the foundation upon which we build our universitywide diversity plan. As an institution of higher education, we have a civic and social responsibility to society: to facilitate a learning community that prepares students to face the world’s complex challenges. At JWU, we are guided by our mission and the principle to “embrace diversity for a richly inclusive community.” All of our campuses are providing opportunities for our community to join together to address the complex issues of systemic racism, police brutality and inequality. We are here to listen, learn and support our students.
JWU Providence Campus
JWU students were invited to participate in a virtual conversation on June 5: "Black Lives Matter: A discussion to acknowledge the current state, explore the intersection of inequality and setting the example for moving the social justice forward." The discussion, hosted through Zoom, was facilitated by student leaders, faculty and staff members, and more meetings are being scheduled this summer to continue the conversation. We are also working with JWU’s Black Student Alliance (BSA) and Student Government Association (SGA) to plan for a year-long discussion focused on healing, learning and action.
JWU Charlotte Campus
The Charlotte Campus Diversity Equity & Inclusion Committee is hosting four discussions in June and July. Although facilitated by a staff or faculty member from the committee, these conversations will focus on student voices sharing their experiences and emotions related to the racial climate in America. The DE&I Committee is also planning student programming in recognition of Juneteenth/Freedom Day (June 19) and including conversations on healing, discourse, social justice and other critical social challenges throughout the 2020-21 academic year.
JWU Denver Campus
Denver Campus Student Affairs leadership and the Student Government Association are collaborating to discuss plans for the campus community to engage in discourse on the topics of racial and social injustice. Community forums are planned for June 17 and June 19. The already scheduled Summer Leadership Virtual Series has been revised to include a focus on issues of racial and social injustice. The campus is also collecting stories from students, faculty and staff on the front lines supporting positive change for social justice and human understanding to be used for future educational purposes.
JWU North Miami Campus
At the North Miami Campus, the department of Student Involvement & Leadership (SIL), the Student Government Association (SGA), Black Student Union (BSU), and Caribbean Students Association (CSA) will present a series of interactive panel discussions, the first of which is entitled, "Crucial Conversations: Black Lives Matter." It is an open forum co-hosted by each organization featuring industry and faculty panelists. In commemoration of Juneteenth (June 19, the commemorative date of the liberation of slaves in the U.S.), SIL will organize a panel discussion serving as an exploration of African-American history, the impact of the social justice movements, and the need for ongoing action. Throughout the year, the academic colleges will be launching continued programming to honor the struggle of black and brown citizens and to address the narratives of racism, police brutality and socio-economic injustice. Counseling Services will be providing additional resources to help identify and address mental health concerns, particularly during times of social justice trauma.
Johnson & Wales University was founded on the belief that people’s lives can be enriched through education. The Wildcat Way defines our values as an institution of higher education; it also binds us together as oneJWU. It begins with respect for each other as we celebrate diversity. It is about helping each other achieve our full potential to make a difference and improve the world around us.
Let’s stand together along with those across our nation to work against racial and social injustice in the world so that we, and all who follow us, will enjoy true freedom and experience transparent equality.
Are you pulling historic recipes from your recipe box to test during the pandemic? The museum has a nice collection of recipe cards from the Providence Gas Company, ca. 1930-1950. This card including Peanut Cookies and Swedish Nut Wafers caught our eye and sure sounds tasty! [CAM ID 2009.202.0804]
Let us know what you are busy making and we'll see if we have an historic version.
It's US Census day! If the census count was a lunch counter how long would it need to be? Now...how long would it need to be if we were all 6 ft. apart (acknowledging that most US restaurants are take-out only at this time)?
