The sopranos and alto are showcased in this short clip of the Flower Duet from Lakmé. In this duet, Lakmé, the daughter of a Hindu priest, and her servant gather flowers along a riverbank. This takes place shortly before Lakmé first meets her English lover, and both the text and the music anticipate raptures to come.
Here's an English translation of the text:
Under the thick dome where the white jasmine
Entwines with the rose,
On the flowering shore, laughing in the morning,
Come, let's go down together,
Slowly let's slide;
On its charming flow
Let's follow the fleeing current:
In the trembling waves,
With a nonchalant hand
Come, let's reach the edge
Where the river source sleeps,
Where the bird sings!
Under the thick dome where the white jasmine.
Call us together!

Chelsea Basler sings "Musetta's Waltz"
From Wednesday's dress rehearsal, here's soprano Chelsea Basler doing a run-through of "Musetta's Waltz" from Puccini's La Boheme. In this aria, Musetta is coquettishly teasing her estranged lover. Despite the blue jeans, it's difficult to NOT envision Chelsea in a gown such as one might wear for a night out in late 19th-century Paris. Here's an English translation of the text:
When I walk alone on the streets,
People stop and stare
And examine my beauty
From head to toe
And then I savor the cravings
which from their eyes transpires
And from the obvious charms they perceive
The hidden beauties.
Come hear Chelsea sing tomorrow, May 11, at McVinney Auditorium. In addition to old favorites such as "O mio babbino caro" and "Casta Diva," she'll also be singing what's destined to become a new favorite: "Ain't it a pretty night?", a stunning aria from the opera Susanna.
