Hundreds of young singers have learned to love choral music through the Rhode Island Children's Chorus. More than a few have gone on to careers in music. This 2008 RICC photo includes soprano Jess Huetteman (middle), who will be singing the soprano solos in our March performance of ANNELIES at the WaterFire Arts Center.

The Providence Singers is thrilled to award a Fassett Fellowship to Jasmine Bright, Alto, who was a member and soloist with our organization last season. Jasmine’s early musical training included voice and theater at Second Stage Studios with Joanne Vecchio. She is an alumna of the Rhode Island Children’s Chorus, where she was a member of the Chamber Choir. During her high school years, she ranked first in the Rhode Island All-State Choral Festival. Jasmine is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where she majored in Music Business. She currently works at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Newport and is a staff member with the Rhode Island Children’s Chorus.

A message to all tenors and basses who might be considering auditioning for the Providence Singers:

One of the joys of membership is the opportunity to perform with world-class musicians. The soprano soloist for this season's annual performance of Messiah with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra is Eleonore Cockerman, one of the founding members of VOCES8. Ms. Cockerman is widely sought as a soloist and has been featured on several recordings (including the recording "The Lamb's Journey" by the Providence-based Ensemble Altera.) Fans of the Netflix series "The Crown" heard her on the soundtrack of season 4.

To hear her sing, follow the link below to an exceptional performance of Messiah. "There were shepherds abiding in the field" begins at minute 32:55 and "Rejoice" starts at 36:14.

It's important to list events early. This morning, we received an email from a local newspaper approving a calendar listing for a talk by composer Ēriks Ešenvald, an event that occurred in the spring of 2021. An extreme example, but the point remains.

Over the summer, we'll be listing the coming season's events on online and print calendars, social media groups, and anywhere singers and audience members might be lurking. Suggestions on where and how to spread the word are always welcome!

Our members bring a wide variety of musical skills and experiences to the choir. Today's spotlight is on Emma Pacheco, a member of the alto section.

Emma is the Band and Choral Director at Webster Middle School (MA) for students in grades 5-8, where she also serves on the school’s Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) team. She also teaches with the Rhode Island Children's Chorus.

A professional trombonist, Emma has played in several orchestras, wind ensembles, concert bands, and jazz bands throughout the years, as well as small ensembles such as brass quintets/quartets/trios, low brass ensembles, and jazz combos. She played trombone in the Narragansett Bay Symphony Community Orchestra for several seasons and currently plays in the She Bop Swing Orchestra, an all-female jazz band.

Emma has sung in choirs and women's choruses since middle school. She joined the Providence Singers in 2019 and was a featured soloist ("The Mouse is a Creature of Great Personal Valor") in our March 2023 performance of Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb. Like many organizations, the Providence Singers has purchased stuff that we no longer need. In hope that our stuff might become YOUR stuff, we are holding an online Yard Sale from June 12 to the end of the summer. https://www.32auctions.com/SingersYardSale

Your purchase will help ensure that no singer will consider membership out of reach because of financial constraints. The money raised will provide financial assistance, either to cover membership dues or through the Fassett Fund, which provides small fellowships for exceptional young singers. More stuff for you, more singers (and less clutter) for us. Everyone wins!
