Custom hold design is something we do frequently for our customers. This Real Deal Tension Board adjustable system wall at Eagle Climbing and Fitness in Eagle, Colorado has been configured to tilt all the way to 60-degrees and they needed holds that would work for that angle. So we designed System Jug #11 (holds in Red; detail image in Teal) to maintain a 15-degree incut while the wall is at 60-degrees overhanging.

This weekend, I got to climb on a new line of power endurance holds I am designing for Atomik Climbing Holds. They are the yellow ones in the photo. This is the kind of work that is exciting for me because I get to design and climb on a product that will serve a purpose for the home wall climber looking for a way to measure their fitness, especially over the winter when most of us are in gyms.

Each set is a 3-pack of holds with a main angle shaped into the incut. The wall I am on in the photo is 25 degrees overhanging, so I am testing the sets with 20, 25, 30, and 35-degree incuts. This means that the 25-degree set incuts are horizontal to the ground, 20 is 5 degrees sloping on my wall, and the 30 and 35 are slightly incut.
The line offers 25 degrees sloping to 60 degrees incut. There are 17 sets in all.

For me, I was able to bang five sets/circuits on this yellow setup where each hold/move did not feel difficult to me. For now let's say each move feels about V2, but after 40 moves and your forearms are torched, they don't feel so much like V2 anymore.

What I like about this circuit is that I can use it as a gauge to measure my fatigue in my training cycle. You might also notice my shoes. I do this training with any feet, and since it's cold here, I throw on a pair of Guide Tennies, which have real climbing shoe rubber that I can edge on. So, I have the comfort of not being cold while still getting in a forearm workout.

Today, my circuits went like this, with 10-minute rests in between.

1 x 36 moves
1 x 29 moves
1 x 16 moves

Three weeks ago of training on these holds, which I do this workout twice a week, my sets looked like this...

1 x 26
1 x 26
1 x 14

Why do these numbers matter? They matter only to me, and here is why. After I warm up, I can run a circuit on the yellow holds, and my "number" of moves will tell me how fatigued I am. If I climb a 15 to 20-move circuit when I am fresh, that is a sign of an easy climbing day, a rest day, or even two.

More to come on these. I'm working on the 45-degree wall holds now, where the goal is to be in the same range of the number of moves, just on incuts suitable for my climbing level on the 45-degree wall.
