At American Vein & Vascular Institute, we celebrate Black History Month by recognizing the incredible contributions of Black individuals to the medicine and healthcare field, such as Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845 - 1926). Mahoney was the first Black professional nurse in America and strongly supported the establishment of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (N.A.C.G.N.).

This month, join us in celebrating Mahoney, and others like her, who paved the way for future generations of Black professionals in healthcare.

Peripheral artery disease is the narrowing of the arteries that carry blood away from the heart. The leading cause of PAD is plaque buildup, called atherosclerosis. It is most common in the legs and feet, but people can also develop it in their arms. It can lead to skin changes, leg pain, wounds that don’t heal, and poor muscle perfusion.
