We are hosting our second annual Ohio’s Island Wine Festival on Saturday, June 22nd from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.! The festival will take place at Heineman’s Winery in Put-In-Bay, featuring wineries, local vendors, and live entertainment. Advanced tickets are $32, and tickets at the gate are $37. Your entrance fee includes a wine glass, a 6-bottle wine carrier, and samples for each winery. Gather your friends and family and start a tradition of celebrating all that Ohio wines offer.

At one time in the early 1900s before Prohibition, at least 17 wineries dotted Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island. Heineman Winery is proudly crowned as the last remaining original island winery of that time. Established by Gustav Heineman in 1888, Heineman's is now in it's 5th generation.

The snow around the island is beginning to melt and school was canceled today due to freezing rain. The islanders are now wondering if the ice around the islands is going to hold up to the warmer temperatures this week. Ice fishing began a little over a week ago after the temperature dipped down to single digits with negative wind chills. We've heard the fish have been biting!

Exploring Ohio: World's largest geode

At one time in the early 1900s before Prohibition, there was over 17 wineries on Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island. Heineman Winery is Ohio's oldest family owned and operated winery and is proudly crowned as the last remaining original island winery of that time.

Grapes were first planted on North Bass Island, AKA "Isle St. George in 1854. Over 500 acres of this beautiful island would become grapes throughout the next several generations. Today, only 40 acres and two historical vineyard homesteads remain and are now under the reign of Heineman Winery. These vineyards sat neglected for a few years, plus the task of finding somebody to live on this secluded island to tend the vineyards was no easy task.

Heineman Winery is proud to announce the first bottling of "Isle St. George" Vidal Blanc!! This is the second wine our winery has produced using grapes grown on this island to the north. This is a huge milestone for us, as this year marks the 4th year since the Rebirth of North Bass began back in 2019.

What a beautiful winter with lots of snow and a very frozen Lake Erie. Snowmobiles, 4 wheelers and ice shanty towns. Ice fishing is now in full swing around the islands and the fish are biting!! Last week during the blizzard, we couldn't go fishing so we bottled a batch of Cabernet Franc. This dry light bodied red is a cousin of Cabernet Sauvignon and is filled with flavors of cherries, raspberries and violets. Cabernet Franc compliments pasta, mean dishes and smoked Lake Erie catfish. Cheers!!!
