When we’re in a pinch, we like shopping second hand online. You can even find brand new items less than retail sometimes!

"But why can I recycle my paper coffee cup in Seattle and not in Tacoma?" ❓

Only a few specialized recycling facilities in the country (including Washington D.C., San Francisco, and our friends up in Seattle) have the ability to recycle this type of single-use paper coffee cup. These cups are actually lined with plastic, which is great for preventing leaks...but makes recycling very difficult and expensive!

Here in Tacoma, single-use paper coffee cups and the lid go in the garbage.

Part 1:

Most 'biodegradable' bags are not what we think. A group of scientists conducted research on a few shopping bags that were supposedly biodegradable, but the truth was much more disappointing. This research doesn't solve the global issue of greenwashing, but it does help bring to light how dishonest bag producers can be about how eco-friendly their products are. So as we're waiting for tougher regulations on the matter, please watch out and don't get fooled!

There are so many trends going around social media at the moment where people are decanting spices into little spice jars, and various liquids into aesthetically pleasing containers, and storing their produce using multiple plastic items… which all looks beautiful but in reality, do we actually need these things?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for buying beautiful things to have in your home, that’s what my whole account is about! I just can’t bring myself to jump on this trend. And believe me, as a content creator I’ve felt pressure to jump on the trend from various brands wanting me to create this sort of content.

I do, however, like taking things that I already have and making them look better or more cohesive in a space.

Or, if you want to have a nice looking container for something, then something more sustainable would not only look great (I personally think that sustainable materials generally look better) but it would also be better for the environment.

So instead of decanting everything into other containers, another option is to do little things like peel off the labels on bottles that actually look nice anyway!

Same with the spices, they’re usually in little glass jars anyway, and if you shop in the same supermarket, then they will all be cohesive and clearly labelled. If you really don’t like them, then try peeling off the labels and replacing them with something else.

As always, do as you wish in your own home. Hopefully this just gives you an alternative to buying lots of containers for items that already come in containers.

Recycling has been marketed as a solution to our one time plastic use problem. In reality, only a small percentage of plastic actually gets recycled.

In addition, plastics degrade each time it gets recycled and can be reused about 2-3 times before it’s time for the landfill.

Please reduce your plastic consumption when possible. Reduce waste and reuse items when possible. And don’t forget your reusable bags. 🤗
