Our office is now closed for a long Labor Day weekend. (Dr. Johns always allows the office to close prior to the first week of September so the office mama's can get all ready for back to school and spend the last of the summer days with the family.) Thorough brushing and flossing help remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth. But toothbrush bristles cannot reach all the way into the depressions and grooves to extract food and plaque. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by "sealing out" plaque and food.

Sealants are easy for our office to apply. The sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and may last several years before a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visits, Dr. Johns will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them when necessary.

The likelihood of developing pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. However, adults can benefit from sealants as well.

And just like that...it has been a decade! Congratulations to Melissa in celebrating her 10 year work anniversary with the practice. When it comes to insurance, finances and patients...Melissa is extremely knowledgeable and such a great asset to this team. She literally can have her back to the counter, have a patient walk in and ask about coverage, and just like Rainman, she can rattle off numbers and percentages. It truly is a gift! I wish that patients knew how hard she fights for dental coverage and benefits on your behalf. She always goes the extra mile! We have been along the ride with her as she purchased her own home, bought new vehicles, added new wiener dogs to the family and most importantly, watched her two well-loved children become adults! Congrats on your tenure Melissa. You have officially reached the "elder" milestone of the practice. Cheers to many more years (we retire when Dr Johns retire) and memories!
