During her nearly three decades at QMG, Kathy Crouch, Medical Lab Tech, has dedicated her career to our lab. Reflecting on her career, Kathy shared, "What I have loved most about my time at QMG is the people I have worked with. Everyone in the lab, and all of the other departments from nursing to reception, truly care about each other and the patients. Everyone does their best to make sure the patients are taken care of and get the best care possible."

Lab Coordinator Frances Stevens said, “Kathy and I went to college and tech school together, so I have known and worked with her for over 33 years. Kathy has helped train most of our current staff in chemistry and has helped mentor students as they passed through the lab. “You always think it is going to happen to the other guys, and you feel sorry for them, but you don't think it is going to happen to you - then it does."

Jerry Runyon has experienced receiving a cancer diagnosis twice, 30 years apart, both rare forms of cancer.

Leading up to National Cancer Survivor's Day, we have shared stories like Jerry's to be messages of hope so that, as Jerry shared, "People might see someone that they recognize not necessarily who they know but can relate to, and see that it happens to normal people and that 34 years later I'm still around."

Jerry Runyon has experienced receiving a cancer diagnosis twice, 30 years apart, both rare forms of cancer.

Jerry shared, "You always think it is going to happen to the other guys, and you feel sorry for them, but you don't think it is going to happen to you - then it does."
Hearing the news as a young man that he had nasopharyngeal carcinoma (previously known as lymphoepithelioma) was a hard blow for Jerry. He traveled to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, where he received 34 radiation treatments to his neck. It was a struggle to keep his spirits up at first.

"You have to remember this will pass," reflected Jerry. "After treatment was over, it took a while for me to feel normal again, but I did."

Jerry faced cancer again in 2020. An at-home colon cancer test led to a whole body scan, which revealed a mass in Jerry's chest. He traveled back to St. Louis, where he had surgery to remove the mass. Thankfully, Jerry did not have to have any other treatment.

Leading up to National Cancer Survivor's Day, we have shared stories like Jerry's to be messages of hope so that, as Jerry shared, "People might see someone that they recognize not necessarily who they know but can relate to, and see that it happens to normal people and that 34 years later I'm still around."

Randi's story reminds us that even in the face of uncertainty, hope is a powerful force. Diagnosed at 29, she faced cancer with courage and faith, finding strength in the journey "between here and there.”

In honor of National Cancer Survivors Day, Randi shared her story, reflecting on how her experience shaped her and her message to fellow survivors to "hope forward."

Let's celebrate Randi and all cancer survivors who inspire us with their strength and hope every day. Join us on Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the QMG Cancer Institute for the “Hope Grows Here” event.

This Memorial Day, we reflect on the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. At the corner of our campus on 12th & Hampshire St., in Quincy, stands a special display of flags, some of which bears the name of a fallen veteran who held a personal connection to someone among our QMG team. Their courage and the sacrifices they made will forever be remembered.

She is one of the first to volunteer to help cover shifts and stay late when needed. She has a very positive attitude and is very supportive of her co-workers. She communicates constructively when she sees something that needs our attention and helps guide new employees to help them to be successful.”

To Lynda Mundy, National Cancer Survivors Day represents the long journey of cancer and her fight to beat it.

“Look at all of those who have made it, and don’t give up. You just have to be a fighter," said Lynda.

In September 2021, at the age of 79, Lynda was diagnosed with stage IA uterine papillary serous cancer. As soon as she detected symptoms, she didn't hesitate to make an appointment, and because of that, they caught it early. She advises everyone to regularly visit the doctor for check-ups, even if they feel healthy.

She was in treatment from December 2021 until December 9, 2023, when they said she had officially beaten it and could find no more cancer. During the initial stages of her treatment, she leaned on the support of friends since she lived far away from family. She later moved to Quincy, where she is now surrounded by the love and support of her family.

Lynda shared, "Remember to do what the physicians tell you and to reach out for help when you need it — no one can do it alone, and there is always someone out there that can help you.”

Join us on Sunday, June 2, from 1 - 3 p.m. at QMG Cancer Institute for our "Hope Grows Here" event, honoring the strength and resilience of cancer survivors.
