Today, the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), is a good time to pause and reflect on why we as a nation enacted the ADA, how it has benefited our society, and why we need to continue striving toward its goals of full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for people with disabilities.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a landmark civil rights law that was signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush. Its purpose is to prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public.
Key provisions of the ADA include:
1. Employment: The ADA prohibits discrimination in all aspects of employment, including hiring, firing, promotions, and job assignments. It also requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities who are able to perform the essential functions of the job.
2. Public Services: State and local governments are required to ensure that their programs and services, such as public transportation, courts, and government offices, are accessible to individuals with disabilities.
3. Public Accommodations: Businesses and nonprofit organizations that serve the public, such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, theaters, and doctors' offices, must ensure that their facilities are accessible to individuals with disabilities. This includes removing physical barriers and providing auxiliary aids and services, like sign language interpreters, where necessary.
4. Telecommunications: The ADA requires telephone and Internet companies to provide relay services for people who use telecommunications devices for the deaf (TDD) or similar devices.
5. Miscellaneous Provisions: The ADA also prohibits retaliation against individuals who assert their rights under the law and prohibits discrimination based on perceived disability.
Disability is a natural part of the human condition. Disability is not uncommon; people from all walks of life, and people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities have always experienced a wide variety of abilities and disabilities.

Society’s Assets is a resource for individuals of any age with any disability.
All set up educating visitors at the Pop-up Biergarten about the country's disability movement, history, and our agency's resources. We are encouraging people to share their own story about their disability journey in order to be represented, seen, and heard by others. If you would like to share your story and cannot attend today's event, you are welcome to either record or write your story and send it to: [email protected]
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our esteemed board member, Carol Schaufel (Jan. 1947 - July 2024). Carol passed away peacefully at home.
Carol was an invaluable member of Society’s Assets for decades. Her dedication and contributions were instrumental in our growth and success. Beyond her professional impact, Carol was a passionate advocate for people with disabilities, leaving a lasting mark on our organization and the community.
Carol found her way to success through resilience, determination, and the support of those around her. Despite at a young age being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and later needing assistance with daily tasks, she embraced life fully. Her journey included both highs and lows, from achieving educational and professional milestones to coping with illness, loss, and traumatic experiences.
Throughout her life, Carol demonstrated a remarkable ability to thrive. She earned a Master’s Degree from UW-Milwaukee, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She taught math for nine years, and worked in rehabilitation counseling for thirty-one years, positively affecting the lives of many. Her commitment to service and advocacy for others earned her recognition as the 1981 Kenosha Person of the Year and the 2016 Wisconsin Advocate of the Year – Relentless Badger Award.
Carol’s adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively, exploring 39 states and 10 countries, enriching her life with diverse experiences.
Her achievements were not just personal triumphs but also served as encouragement for others with disabilities.
Key to Carol's success was her belief that having a disability doesn’t define one’s life negatively. She lived by the principle that everyone faces challenges, and it’s how one responds to them that matters. She emphasized the importance of living fully, being true to oneself, and recognizing that we are more alike than different as human beings.
With the encouragement of her doctor, Carol wrote a book - By the Grace of God and You: A Chair Does Not a Person Make. Through her story, Carol conveyed a message that with determination and support, anyone can find fulfillment in life.
In essence, Carol’s path to success was paved with courage, faith, and unwavering support from her circle of friends. Her story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.
Funeral services honoring Carol’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2024 at the Piasecki Funeral Home.
Private interment will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
A visitation for Carol will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Society’s Assets enters its 50th year of offering and promoting services and programs to empower people with all disabilities to take personal responsibility so that they may achieve or continue independent lifestyles within the community.
This month is the start of Society’s Assets 50th Fiscal Year (July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025)
Society’s Assets is known as a Center for Independent Living, otherwise known as a CIL, is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization run by people with disabilities (over 51%), for people with disabilities to address needs and barriers within the community. Society’s Assets main office is located in Racine, Wisconsin, and provides services throughout the counties of Racine, Kenosha, Jefferson Walworth, and Rock.
The history of Society's Assets mirrors that of the independent living movement in the 1970s. People with disabilities began organizing to fight for their rights to self-determination, working to remove existing physical, social, and attitudinal barriers to their full participation in society.
Society's Assets began as a membership organization in Racine. It was comprised of people with disabilities who wanted to eliminate barriers that led to dependency. The agency was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1974. The first office opened in 1976 with funds available through the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA). Later, funding from the Rehabilitation Act created five Centers for Independent Living in Wisconsin, including Society's Assets and other centers in Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, and at UW-Stout in Menominee. Today, there are three additional Centers located in Superior, Stevens Point, and La Crosse. All Centers are devoted to the creation, delivery, and coordination of services aimed at promoting independent and self-sufficient lifestyles for individuals with disabilities.
Society's Assets is committed to the hard work that is necessary to create equity, inclusion, and access for people with disabilities.
