The Studio of Classical Dance Arts
A professional ballet school serving Southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois
our mission at The Studio is to inspire students to discover their full potential through professional ballet instruction and exciting performing opportunities. While building the foundation vital to excellence in all dance styles, students will learn the value of self-discipline, personal responsibility and commitment. Whether they are studying to pursue a career in dance or simply taking class f
Summer at The Studio is off to an amazing start! Our first Workshop over the last two weeks was full of ballet, laughter and, of course, sore muscles ;). Here are a few moments, enjoy!
Great information here, also, the discussion in the comments is quite interesting. Of course, nothing is completely black and white, but these are pretty good general guidelines for intermediate to advanced dancers. If you are interested Engerman: Ballet Teacher, Coach, Choreographer is among the best for good, down to earth, relevant information.
Dance Students: You cannot take the summer off dance and pick up where you left off. Dance is not a seasonal sport. These are dance facts of life.
If you take an entire summer off or take only a few classes here and there, plan to begin the fall having lost at least 50% of the strength, stamina, placement, flexibility, and mental focus that you gained in the previous year.
If you study dance 2-4 days per week over the summer, plan to maintain the level you created during the school year but not necessarily improve—unless that 2-4 days per week is significantly more than you are used to.
If you want to improve your dance immensely, attend a summer intensive in addition to consistent classes while you are home. Or stay home and attend a full schedule of classes at your home studio.
These decisions will affect your placement level in the fall and possibly your long term dance goals.
I intend no judgement here. I am pointing out the physical and mental demands of long term progress in dance. People have different goals with their dance training. Make sure that your actions match up to and will create your goals.
Dancing as a hobby is fantastic and gives you space to take longer periods of time off.
If you want a dance career, yes, go ahead and take a week or two for rest and relaxation. (It’s good for you.) But more than that hinders progress. The choice is yours.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made Carmina Burana an incredibly inspiring and spectacular experience! We are grateful for the work, talent, and dedication of our beautiful dancers and their families. We are beyond proud of each of you! A special thank you to our collaborators, Jim Schatzman, Pat Badger, and the amazing CAS singers and team. Also, a big thanks to the talented crew of musicians, vocal soloists, Parkside's Jessica, Kevin, and their team. Each of you played a huge part in bringing Carmina to life. And to our fantastic audiences, Merci beaucoup!
With just 5 short days before the Carmina performances, we'd like to give a shout out to the folks that helped make the sets the first time around. With well over 1500 pounds of lumber, 160 heavy duty hinges, countless nuts and bolts and 18 yards of 10 ft wide fire proof fabric this set took a bit of work! A big thank you to Wally Fleuchaus, Heather Riley Shaffer and Scott Shaffer. They were absolutely invaluable! And, Skelly Warren who helped modify the platforms in 2020 to make them easier to move! Called "Parallels" in the theater the base of the platforms travels compressed and simply unfolds, top is put in place and it is curtain time:). Carmina Burana is fundamentally about the human experience presented through music and dance. Performed often by large ballet companies around the world it is extraordinarily rare for a school to present such a monumental work. As performers Linda and Marc performed John Butler's truly iconic version many times, if you know his ballet you'll see nods to it in our choreography:) Here is a link to an Interview with Stoner Winslett, Director of the Richmond Ballet talking about Mr. Butler's Carmina Burana.
