It is essential to recognize Indigenous peoples and how today is often considered a day of mourning amongst Indigenous communities. The lands we call home belonged to Indigenous peoples and were taken or seized through unethical manners, including persuasion, trickery, and violence. Indigenous people were victims of horrific crimes stemming from settlers' greed, ignorance, and lack of regard for human life. We would like to encourage those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving to also recognize the suffering and lived experiences of others. To learn more about the Indigenous people who called our lands home, head to native-land.ca for comprehensive mapping of traditional tribal lands.
The Raleigh area was traditionally the home of the Skaruhreh/Tuscarora nation, the Catawba nation, and the Lumbee tribe.
