Today we celebrate freedom, unity, and belonging. As we celebrate Juneteenth, we reflect on the historical significance of this important milestone in our history and its role in our nation's ongoing pursuit of equality.

Did you know that nearly 13,000 American workers are injured every day? That’s one every 7 seconds. Distractions on the jobsite can be deadly. This and graphic from the National Stone Sand & Gravel Association is a reminder to focus on the role that distractions play in accidents.

It is of utmost importance to learn about many of the proactive ways you can address distractions, one of the greatest causes of accidents and injuries, at the workplace.

As the temperatures continue to rise, make sure you know the signs of heat stress. Signs can include confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures and very high body temperatures. Meet a Team Member Monday - Brooke Crain!

Brooke is a HR Representative and has been with us since January of this year. She was born in Atlanta but grew up in Winston-Salem and attended UNC Charlotte, graduating in May of 2021 with a BA in Talent Management/Acquisition.

She has worked in HR/Recruiting/Talent Acquisition since 2020 and her focus at Sunrock revolves around HR Projects, Salary, and Recruiting. Brooke is passionate about working with people, teaching, and learning new skills. Her favorite parts of the job include learning more about the industry and company operations, attending career/job fairs, networking, and the competitive aspect of recruitment.

Brooke has two cats (Lady & Lulu) and her happy place is the beach, mainly Bald Head Island. She is the youngest sibling and enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Growing up she did Gymnastics, Competitive Dance, and Parelli Horse Riding.

In her free time, Brooke loves reading, painting, cooking, and listening to live music. She has been to over 20 concerts and her favorite artists include Kenny Chesney, Morgan Wallen, Van Halen, and Chris Brown. Brooke also enjoys traveling, playing golf, hiking, missionary work, volunteering, watching sports, and is addicted to coffee and Celsius.

We are glad to have Brooke on our team and appreciate everything that she does!

We were proud to work with C&W Concrete on the new rickhouse slab pour for Mystic Farm and Distillery in Durham, NC. The pour for this project was completed on April 5th and saw our RMC team pour a little over 173 yards of concrete.

This section is for a new bourbon rickhouse, which Mystic Distillery is quite famous for. Their bourbon was the winner of the 2023 Best 5-Year Small Batch Bourbon at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

2008 saw the relocation of Sunrock’s corporate office to Raleigh in the newly renovated building that once housed the North Wake Regional Library. Our corporate office is conveniently located between I-540 and I-440 in Raleigh, just 2 miles south of I-540 off of Six Forks Road.

Join us in congratulating Charles Irvin for receiving Employee of the Month for May! Charles is an Equipment Operator on one of our Paving Crews within our Contracting Division and he has been a part of the Sunrock team since April of 2020.

Early 2024 saw Sunrock’s Contracting Division begin work with developer Al. Neyer on a new 265,000 square foot warehouse in Mebane, NC. This facility will be home to STIHL's Zero-Turn Mower distribution operations. Sunrock was responsible for the stone, curb, and asphalt paving for the entire site.

This project will consume approx. 13,000 tons of ABC, 450 cubic yards of concrete, and 5,750 tons of asphalt. Work began in February 2024 and should wrap up in May 2024. We look forward to building a continuing working relationship with Al. Neyer as they continue to expand their presence in the North Carolina market.

This past weekend, we hosted our Annual Mixer Truck Rodeo at our North Raleigh facility. Thank you to all the Concrete Delivery Professional (CDP) drivers that participated, the wonderful team members that volunteered to coordinate and judge the competition, as well as the families that came out to cheer on participants.

A group of our CDPs competed in this Rodeo with the goal of going to the State competition later this year on August 17th in Charlotte. The Mixer Truck Rodeo consists of a written exam and numerous obstacles which require incredibly precise driving and handling. Both the exam and the obstacle course are timed and used to determine the total number of points that a driver can accumulate.

The CDP’s with the three highest scores were selected to represent Sunrock at the Mixer Truck Rodeo in Charlotte. These drivers were Henry Hogan (1st place), Sheldon Hayward (2nd place), and Tony Fields (3rd place). With a good showing in Charlotte these three have a chance to compete with their peers on a national level at the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) Mixer Truck Rodeo.

We're proud of our dedicated and highly skilled workforce - the talent of our truck drivers was on full display during this competition. June is and Sunrock strives to exceed federal and NC safety & health compliance standards. Training and teaching our team members to understand safety standards and recognize work place hazards and at-risk behaviors is the fundamental key.

We do this through task training, daily work place examinations, weekly safety meetings, monthly inspection visits, and many other safety practices.

It was a pleasure to have North Carolina Department of Transportation COO Chris Peoples close out the morning sessions at the North Carolina Aggregates Association Summer Convention. Sunrock, the association, and NCDOT look forward to working together as they continue to build and improve transportation across the state!

Sunrock opened the Woodsdale Quarry in Roxboro, North Carolina back in 2007. This facility supplies granite gneiss aggregates, asphalt, and other construction aggregates. It is adjacent to Norfolk Southern Railroad.

The NCDOL's Awards Program recognizes private and public firms throughout the state that achieve and maintain good safety records. The program is designed to stimulate interest in accident prevention and to promote safety in the workplace by providing an incentive to employers and employees to maintain a safe and healthful workplace.

During this we recognize that training and development are important keys to maintaining safety and success in the workplace. It is our mission to prioritize safety not just this month, but every month. There are many ways we can all make a difference when it comes to keeping ourselves and those around us safe.

Sunrock has partnered with MSHA, OSHA, Gregory Poole, Crew’s Crane Training, United Rentals, The National Safety Council, North Carolina Aggregates Association, the Carolina Ready Mix Association, and other training leaders to ensure our team members understand how to safely and effectively perform their duties.

For this we go back to 2006. This was the year that a hot mix asphalt plant opened at our Kittrell location and the following year a hot-mix asphalt plant was added at our Wake Forest facility.
