KICKZ Chick of the week: Vashtie Kola

Popping on the scene strong in 2005, Vashtie Kola did some behind the scenes work for ’s as a stylist (hence the iconic Pharrell photo) and more. From there she kept her presence strong in the sneaker game, collaborating with various brands, and even being the first ever woman to land her own Jordan collaboration. Whether or not you like her, you can’t deny her influence! What’s your favorite Vashtie moment?!

Nowadays the name Kanye West is synonymous with sneaker culture. But it wasn’t always that way.

Back in 2006, Kanye designed a shoe in collaboration with Adidas, a Rod Laver Vintage edition that featured an iteration of the famous Dropout Bear logo, but it never released.

In 2007, Kanye West and longtime friend Nigo collaborated on the iconic Dropout Bear Bapesta dropped on January 2, 2007 and with so few pairs being released, they fetch a pretty penny.

In 2008, Kanye released a collaboration with Reebok, putting his own twist on colleague Jay-Z’s S. Carter Model.

In 2009, Kanye West was taken on by Fendi as an intern along with longtime friend Virgil Abloh. Kanye, speaking about his internship at the fashion house, was quoted saying “every day, going to work, walking to work, getting cappuccinos…just for $500 a month”. Consider that at the time Ye was already a multi-Grammy award-winning artist.

Soon after, in 2009, came Ye’s first collection with Nike, the Air Yeezy 1, followed quickly by a 3-model collection with Louis Vuitton.

Fast forward 3 years and the Nike Air Yeezy 2 is released. Frustrated with Nike’s slow rollout schedule, Ye ended his partnership with the brand. In come Adidas, again, technically.

In February 2015, YEEZY Season 1 dropped. Ye had released a single colorway of the Yeezy Boost 750 (the “Light Brown’s”) -but only 9,000 pairs were released. The first “real” release of a Yeezy Sneaker was the Yeezy Boost 350, which launched on June 27, 2015, this release was made available worldwide. The rest is history, Yeezy continued releasing new models almost every year after, and the brand has become an internationally recognized label.
