Emerald Ash Borer killed off almost all the mature ash trees in the Piedmont. However, I've seen a lot of juvenile ash trees coming back in the understory. Hoping that nature finds a balance and the ash trees can make a comeback.
Had so much rain, even the turtles are looking for high ground!
Unexpected rain cut the prescribed fire short, but the NCFS was still able to get some acres burned. With any luck, tomorrow will work out better.

This juvenile pine stand used to be so dense you couldn't see the forest floor. We conducted a pre- commercial thinning in early 2021. A year later, the residual crop trees have plenty of growing space and are taking off.
Spring is here, snakes are out again!
Drive almost 4 hours to inspect 668 acre property and when you get there, you're greeted by an extra 30 minutes of work to remove the fallen tree in front of the gate!

First snow day for the field dog! She had a good time. I wore the wrong socks and froze my toes off.
My truck buddy hates office days.
Watched the cold front roll in across a field this afternoon.
New hire is very proficient at finding snakes and rodents. Trying to train her how to sniff out property corners, but that's taking a bit more work. Once we get that skill down we'll work on measuring edge trees on inventory plots.
Wildlife thinning got started last week. Looking great so far; can't wait to follow it up with a prescribed burn!
