1882 $500 Gold Certificate

This Fr.1216a features the portrait of Abraham Lincoln at left and the signatures of Treasury officers Parker and Burke to the bottom left and right of the red scalloped Treasury Seal on the face of the note.

The golden orange printed back displays a valiant bald eagle in flight with the American flag clutched in his talons.

This evenly circulated note is graded Very Fine 20 with no derogatory comments on the holder.

A remarkable piece of Civil War history:

C.S. Hunley Captain George Dixon was found with this gold coin in his pocket, which saved his life from a bullet at the battle of Shiloh, Dixon suffered a bullet wound to his left leg, but a gold $20 coin given to him by his sweetheart Queenie Bennett absorbed the brunt of the damage, miraculously saving both his leg and his life... For 137 years, no one knew whether the story was a historical fact or a romantic tale passed from generation to generation.

A Legend Becomes Reality:

During the excavation of the Hunley, a gold coin minted in 1860 was discovered lying on Dixon’s hip bone. It was warped from the impact of a bullet, and traces of lead were discovered on the coin. One side bears the image of Lady Liberty, and the other has been sanded and inscribed with the following words:

Shiloh
April 6th, 1862
My life Preserver
G. E. D.

This piece resides in the Friends of tue Hunley Museum in Charleston.

A curator employed by RMS Titanic, Inc. holds a fan of paper currency recovered from the wreck of Titanic after decades under the sea, the dozen pieces here preserved almost exclusively in leather bags or wallets. A freeze drying process used by restorers soon after the recovery of delicate artifacts such as these ensures the removal of both moisture and damaging salts, and in theory halts further deterioration of the precious items. Much variety has been found amongst money recovered from the liner, reflecting both the lack of uniformity in currencies of the time and the great diversity of her passengers and crew, who came from nearly thirty different countries.

Granted salvor-in-possession rights by American court order in 1994, RMSTI remains overseer of more than 5,500 unique artifacts, these recovered from the wreck site over the course of dozens of dives conducted in partnership with IFREMER beginning in 1987. Of these, around thirteen hundred pieces may be found on permanent exhibit in locations around the world. The rest are stored and cared for at an undisclosed location near Atlanta, Georgia, where many of these delicate surviving pieces require precise and ongoing attention.
