Teachers from the DPS Hospital School at Duke dressed up as bumper cars and serenaded their student-patients with the Monster Mash and a made-up Halloween song on Halloween.

Based in Duke University Hospital, the school is a partnership between Durham Public Schools and Duke Health.

The singalong is part of their “Holidate” schedule where the teachers pick one holiday a month to go around as a group to sing to their patients.

In adults 65 years and older, an adjuvanted flu vaccine -- which contains a substance that enhances the vaccine’s effectiveness -- given at the same time as a shingles vaccine had no additional side effects compared to a high-dose flu vaccine given with a shingles vaccine.

A Duke Health-led study supports the option of providing the shingles vaccine and adjuvanted flu vaccine to older adults at the same time when both vaccines are needed. People 65 years and older and people with certain chronic diseases are at higher risk of severe flu complications. Everyone 6 months and older can help fight flu by getting vaccinated.

Endoscopies usually require sedation, along with the inherent risks of anesthesia and more time in the hospital. In May 2024, Richard became Duke Health’s first patient to undergo a transnasal endoscopy, in which the scope is fed through the nose. No anesthesia is required, and he returned to his normal activities that same day.

A team at Duke Health implanted the device to help 34-year-old Harbison gain strength until he could receive a human heart transplant.
