Krazy Acres
Hi! We are a homesteading family that is just trying to live, learn & do better!
Come along with us through all of the crazy that comes with raising kids & animals!
I have at least a handful of Red Rangers that I am willing to part with. Hatched on January 17th. They will be ready to process mid-April or keep them to lay. I have pullets & cockerels.
Raised on non-gmo Kalmbach feed, non-gmo scratch, non-gmo dried BSF larva, kitchen scraps & they free range every day.
Located in Ramona but going to be going to Temecula area tomorrow, Saturday 3/23 & can bring some with me.
Just seeing if anyone wants this guy before he gets processed. He’s a cool dude & does well at protecting the ladies. Has always been kind to the humans/we don’t handle him much but he has never gone after anyone including my young kids that roam around “his” yard. Brahma around 1 year old located in Ramona.
😱😂
Homemade Fridge Pickles!
6 mini cucumbers
As much garlic as your heart desires
About a teaspoon of peppercorns
Optional: jalapenos, pickling spices, whatever you’d like!
3 cups filtered water
3/4 cup white vinegar
2 tablespoons salt (pickling salt if you have it)
2-3 springs of fresh dill or 1-2 tablespoons of dried dill
Optional: 1-2 tbsp sugar (I personally don’t like sweet pickles & I don’t think these come out sour enough to need sugar but it’s personal preference!)
Wash & cut cucumbers into whatever shape you prefer, I like to keep them halved/whole so they stay crunchy. Put in jars, along with any additions you’d like.
Add the rest of your ingredients to a pot & bring to boil. Turn to low/medium & simmer for 15 min, stirring as needed to make sure salt disolves. Take off heat & let cool (to prevent cracking glass jars & also to not cook your cucumbers.)
Cover cucumbers completely with brine. If you are using metal lids/rings for your jars, make sure to create a barrier with parchment or wax paper so the vinegar brine does not rust your lid.
Refrigerate for at least 24 hours- but they get better with time! I like them best after 3+ days.
Hope you enjoy!
When you accidentally pick up some poults on the way home. 😜🦃 Thanks BZQuail Farm!
🦃 Kevin 🦃
He’s grumpy but he is a great protector of our flock. I also like that he’s like a security guard- if anyone starts bickering, he stomps over to them like the big ole dino he is & breaks them up. 😆
We went to dinner tonight.
My 4 year old daughter asked about the waitress, as she walked away (thankfully): “Why is her hair crumpled up?”
Me: “It’s in a bun.”
4 year old: “Like a hot dog?”
😂😂😂
Lil Patch Of Heaven, Sweet Heart Farms & Mini Barn Market are some of our favorites!
Cleaning out the dreaded 360. 😂 I’m always excited when it’s over & I can add some new eggs in!
Homemade chicken bone broth- 1000000% better tasting for you, plus all fresh ingredients. You can do this with any bones! Chicken, turkey, rabbit, pork, beef.
You can also have it simmer in a pot on the stove for 24-48 hours, adding water as needed. I prefer the crockpot myself because my life is too busy to babysit pots. 😜
I hope you try making your own bone broth- it’s easy & it’s worth it!
I ordered a dozen Bresse hatching eggs from Davidson Coops & Farm. Ashley was kind enough to send me a few extra, I received 15.
This was my first experience with shipped eggs & I have to say that it was a great one!! I ended up throwing away one egg before lockdown, as it had grown but unfortunately passed. Out of the remaining 14, I wasn’t sure how many would hatch. I’m not a pro at candling, but I saw movement on a few & was expecting 4-5 to hatch for sure. To my surprise, 13/14 hatched! They are also doing great.
Mind you, these eggs came from Kentucky all the way to California! That hatch rate is fantastic.
Highly recommend ordering from them if you are interested in starting up or adding to your flock with some Bresse.
We went to Temecula area today & visited Penny Pickle’s Workshop. If you live in or visit Southern California & have kids, I’d definitely recommend taking them to Penny Pickle’s! The kids have a blast every time we go!
😇
Part 2: How to make use of a mean rooster. 😅
Part 1: How to make use of a mean rooster. 😂 The way I have found gets tender meat out of older birds- plus you get chicken broth to use for your sides, soup, whatever you’d like to use it for!
Sorry this is a bit long winded- this is my first real video & I was nervous.
You know it’s a chilly morning when the turkey gobbles & you see his breath. 🤣
Happy Valentine’s Day!
This guy hopes the ladies will let him give them some love today. I hope so too because I really want some turkey babies. 🥹 💝
Ahhh to be that carefree. 😆 I guess KitKat deserves a good snooze for keeping us mice & gopher free! 🐈
💯
Our future depends on it
Some of our current babies! Most in these pictures are Serama grow outs & there’s a few available if anyone’s looking to add to their flock. 💘
Not me trying to sneak through the quiet post office & not get noticed while I have a loud peeping box in my hands. So stealthy. 😇
We have new neighbors. The day that they moved in, my husband & I were processing our meat birds in our backyard. It was a possibility that they could have seen us doing that, so I was like oh hell, idk about that first impression. 😬😬😬
I kept wanting to go over there to welcome them & introduce ourselves. I thought I might make them a fresh loaf of sourdough & take them some fresh eggs from our chickens.
But I kept going back & forth (thank you, anxiety) on whether to give them bread or not. I kept thinking “Is that weird to give homemade bread to strangers?”
I finally decided to just make the bread. What’s the worst that could happen? They don’t want it, throw it away & I’ll never know anyway.
I told my kids that we were going to go over there today. That kind of forced me to get over my anxiety & just do it because they were excited to meet the kids that they have heard playing over there.
I’m like… really awkward with new people. It took a lot of uncomfortable feelings walking over there & have no idea how they would react to strangers showing up at their door.
But you know what, it went great. They were super nice, have kids the same age as my kids & don’t mind that our overly friendly barn cats come into their yard (actually they loved to hear that they keep the rodents down & said their kids have been trying to get the cats to come in their house).
And guess what?
The wife/mom was SO excited about the bread. During the short interaction, she mentioned about 10 times how excited she was about the bread that I made them & couldn’t wait to try it.
My heart felt so happy as I walked back home.
I need to remember this when my anxiety starts creeping up & makes me doubt myself.
Just make the damn bread!
I feel like I am still… just in a different way. 🤣
Weekends call for visiting our local farm stands! The kids always look forward to it too. Today, we visited Lil Patch Of Heaven. Love it there!
… and yes, she dressed herself. 😂😂😂
Nothing out of the ordinary going on here. 😜 One of our Serama chicks watching some Saturday morning tv with our son.
Brand new in box chicken feeder. Fits 60 lbs of feed in it, which is so nice if you just don’t like having to fill feeders constantly. SOLD
