March is National Women’s History Month. We’re incredibly proud of the diversity at Charter, including the fact that females make up 80% of our organization, with more than 50 females in senior leadership roles. We are thrilled to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments and contributions women have made to our company, the vast field of health care and our lives. From advances in medicine and bedside care to thought leaders and changemakers, Charter acknowledges the compassion, integrity and innovation of women throughout history.
March is Social Work Month. This year’s theme, Social Work Breaks Barriers, emphasizes how social workers empower individuals and communities, helping them fulfill their potential. We’re humbled to witness our Charter social workers' impact on our patients and families every day. We’re grateful for their dedication to serving patients and families with compassionate, life-affirming care.
Continuing Charter’s celebration of Black History Month, we recognize medical pioneer Jane Cooke Wright, MD.
After earning her medical degree, Dr. Jane Cooke Wright worked alongside her father at the Cancer Research Foundation in Harlem, which her father established in 1948. Together, father and daughter researched chemotherapy drugs that led to remissions in patients with leukemia and lymphoma.
After her father passed, Wright became the head of the Cancer Research Foundation at age 33. She created an innovative technique to test the effect of drugs on cancer cells by using patient tissue rather than laboratory mice.
Wright advanced as the Director of Cancer Chemotherapy at New York University Medical Center and an associate dean at New York Medical College.
The New York Cancer Society elected Wright as its first female president in 1971. Her research helped transform chemotherapy from a last resort to a viable treatment for cancer.

Continuing Charter’s celebration of Black History Month, we recognize medical pioneer Solomon Carter Fuller, MD.
After earning his medical degree in 1897 from Boston University, Solomon Carter Fuller became the first African American psychiatrist.
In 1904, he began pioneering work with the psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in Germany, studying the traits of dementia. Dr. Fuller was the first to translate much of Alzheimer’s work into English, including research regarding Auguste Deter, the person with the first reported case of the disease.
When he returned to the United States, Fuller continued research on Alzheimer’s disease, as well as schizophrenia, depression, and other mental illness. In 1912, he published the first comprehensive review of Alzheimer’s cases.
Continuing Charter’s celebration of Black History Month, we recognize medical pioneer Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD.
After working for years as a nurse, Crumpler became the first Black woman in the United States to receive an MD degree. She earned that distinction at the New England Female Medical College in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was the institution’s only Black graduate.
After the Civil War, Crumpler moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with other Black doctors caring for formerly enslaved people in the Freedmen’s Bureau. In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published her Book of Medical Discourses. It chronicles her experiences as a doctor and provides guidance on maternal and child health.
Currently, no known picture of Dr. Crumpler exists.

As part of Charter’s celebration of Black History Month, today we recognize medical pioneer James McCune Smith, MD.
Smith was a man of many firsts; he became the first Black American to receive a medical degree, he was the first Black person to own and operate a pharmacy in the United States, and he was the first black physician to be published in U.S. medical journals.
Thank you, Dr. Smith, for paving the way for so many.
National Wise Health Care Consumer Month highlights the importance of making educated decisions about our health. We encourage everyone to be savvy health care consumers by understanding their health options and communicating their goals, values and preferences with their care providers. Learn how Charter can help get you started: https://www.charterhcg.com/
According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, Black Americans comprise only 8% of hospice patients, while Caucasians account for more than 80%. What makes this alarming is the fact that Black Americans are more likely to have many of the conditions common to hospice care, such as cancer and heart disease.
Understanding the barriers to hospice is critical to increasing the quality of life for Black Americans. Charter believes everyone deserves an equal opportunity for quality, compassionate care, and we strive to provide meaningful education to help eliminate the misunderstandings surrounding hospice care.

Congratulations to Stephanie Ferratt, who was recently promoted to Executive Director of Palm Desert, CA. Stephanie began as an LVN with Charter nearly 12 years ago! "Charter is my family; it has grown over the years in so many ways, and so have I,” said Stephanie. “What drew me to hospice work was knowing that I could make a positive impact in someone’s life, even for a short period of time and at a time when it means the most, end of life.”
Congratulations, Stephanie, on a very well-deserved promotion! We are excited to see where you will lead your team in this journey.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader who challenged us to lead with empathy in our daily lives. We are still navigating many of the same issues Dr. King fought for, racial justice, economic equality, affordable housing, labor rights, etc., even in 2023. Today, we acknowledge his contributions and their impact on our society and reflect on how we can continue to move these issues forward.
