One of the methods of sterilization that is still being used today is Ethylene Oxide (gas sterilization) It is a very toxic and dangerous method used in medical, dental and veterinary offices. The safest means to sterilize effectively would be a steam process. We are NOT sold on the idea of Hydrogen Peroxide sterilization being effective enough to KILL micro-organisms either. This process is fairly new and is very expensive to purchase. Gas sterilization and gamma radiation processes are very dangerous to use and many offices do not have the proper training on the operation of these systems so exposure to these vapors could be deadly. Steam, Chemical or Rapid Dry-Heat are processes that JDR Technical Service recommends.

Sorry we haven't posted in awhile, but our technicians have been very busy since the Anaheim Children's Dental Incident took place. Here's what we know now.... The insurance companies are now requiring MOST but not ALL dental offices to CALIBRATE and VALIDATE the autoclaves each year, and also have their water tested for micro-bacteria every 3 to 6 months along with having the X-Ray machines calibrated and checked yearly. Our company, to my knowledge is the only one that validates autoclaves by using temperature/pressure dataloggers that are placed in each autoclave's chamber vessel. The cost is approximately $500.00 to validate. The cost may be increased if it needs some repair work. If the insurance company does not get this type of paperwork, they may possibly cancel your business insurance.

We warn everyone that procedures like this that involve anesthesiologists and very young children are a recipe for disaster.....Be Vigilant ! Do your Homework and check your references. The threat of contamination in the water filtration lines has been around for years. This is a 20/20 ABC News report from Barbara Walters back in Feb. 1999. This is a huge problem that most dental offices experience in their practice. The use of a disinfectant flushed through the water lines on a weekly basis and or the use of a sterile water system would solve this problem. This might explain isolated cases of a bacterial outbreak in the water filtration system around the globe, especially at the most recently Children's Dental Group of Anaheim. We have found that sterilization is a big problem in the Tattoo industry. Many parlors automatically think that if you cook the instruments long enough......they must be sterile! That assumption is wrong. However, on a good note, as the industry grows larger each year, the FDA requirements pushes these new parlors to be more educated in their sterilization procedures and therefore calling us in to certify the equipment. As far as the contaminates in the ink that they use? This is a very NEW problem just discovered and has NOT been addressed as much as it should be. Our advice is to go to reputable tattoo parlors that has state of the art autoclaves and consult the artist on his ink supplies before getting tatted.

JDR Technical agrees once again that therapy dogs will help patients keep calm during a dental procedure. I myself, experienced first hand that children and even some adults left dental offices time and time again screaming and even jumping up from the chair leaving the room with the dental bib still around their neck.
