Eisenhower Health and OneFuture Coachella Valley’s Healthcare Workforce Leadership Roundtable Expand Nurse Training at
College of the Desert
Coalition of employers and educators has formed to address a shortage in healthcare professionals by expanding training options for local students
Palm Desert, CA – Aug. 27, 2024 – Eisenhower Health and OneFuture Coachella Valley’s Healthcare Workforce Leadership Roundtable are supporting the expansion of nurse training in the Coachella Valley to support an additional 70 students in the College of the Desert Nursing Program -- doubling the size of the 2024-25 class.
Eisenhower Health is part of OneFuture Coachella Valley’s Healthcare Workforce Roundtable, a group of healthcare industry leaders that formed to create a local response to the nationwide shortage of nursing and healthcare professionals with a total $2.9 million commitment by RoundTable members to College of the Desert’s nursing program.
“At Eisenhower Health, we are deeply committed to the development of a skilled health care workforce in our community. Our partnership with OneFuture Coachella Valley's Healthcare Workforce Leadership program is a testament to our dedication to nurturing the next generation of nurses. Together, we are empowering these future health care leaders with the training, support, and resources they need to excel in their careers and provide the highest level of care to our community,” said Ken Wheat, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Eisenhower Health.
“Removing barriers for local students is critical to building a compassionate and responsive local workforce,” said Sheila Thornton, CEO of OneFuture Coachella Valley. “Often it is not just the tuition that is the barrier, but other factors such as housing or transportation. Removing those barriers can help a student graduate on time and start their careers as nurses caring for patients in our hospitals and healthcare centers.”
Having the support of an industry-led coalition like the Roundtable was vital to jumpstart the expansion of seats in College of the Desert’s nursing program.
"We are honored and grateful to be chosen as a trusted partner in the endeavor to head off Coachella Valley's looming healthcare workforce shortage," said Interim Superintendent/President Laura Hope. "In addition to adding more qualified employees to the healthcare workforce, we get to change the trajectory of more students' lives. Additionally, when our students benefit, many of whom will become first-generation college graduates, the entire community benefits."
Happy Monday!

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is a prestigious recognition program dedicated to honoring the exceptional clinical skills and compassionate care provided by nurses. Established in 1999 by the DAISY Foundation, the award serves as a tribute to the dedication and kindness nurses demonstrate daily, impacting the lives of patients and their families in profound ways.🌼
Eisenhower Health reignited the recognition program, receiving numerous nominations and recently held DAISY Award presentations for nurses in its inpatient and outpatient areas.🌼
The DAISY Foundation was created by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), an autoimmune disease. During his hospitalization, Patrick's family was deeply moved by the extraordinary care and compassion shown by his nurses. To express their gratitude and recognize the outstanding work of nurses, they established the DAISY Award.🌼
The primary goal of the DAISY Award is to honor and celebrate nurses for their extraordinary contributions to patient care. The award recognizes nurses who go above and beyond in their clinical practice, demonstrating excellence in their profession and a deep commitment to patient-centered care.🌼
Congratulations to the exceptional new nurses from Eisenhower Health's 2023 Summer Cohort who recently graduated from our Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation Nurse Residency Program and presented the results of their diverse evidence-based yearlong projects. Way to go!🎉🎉🎉
Our comprehensive Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation Nurse Residency Program is a full-time employment opportunity. The program provides new nurses with support from unit leadership and educators, receiving exposure to a variety of clinical experiences within the health care environment. The program facilitates hands-on clinical practice and is designed to enhance our new nurses' decision-making and critical thinking skills. Additionally, they enjoy strong peer support and one-on-one collaboration with an experienced preceptor.

Eisenhower Health is proud to announce its inclusion in the 2024 Cal Hospital Compare Opioid Care and Patient Safety Honor Roll. This prestigious recognition is awarded to hospitals that demonstrate exceptional commitment and performance in opioid stewardship and patient safety.
In the honor roll list, 100 hospitals met performance standards in opioid care, 72 hospitals met performance standards in patient safety, and 30 hospitals met performance standards for opioid stewardship and patient safety — Eisenhower Health being one of those 30 hospitals.
The Cal Hospital Compare Opioid Care and Patient Safety Honor Roll, an initiative of the California Health and Human Services Agency (CHHS), acknowledges hospitals that have made significant strides in implementing best practices for opioid prescribing, patient care, and safety. The honor roll aims to promote and recognize hospitals that are leading the way in addressing the opioid crisis through effective and innovative approaches.
“To be included in the 2024 Cal Hospital Compare Opioid Care and Patient Safety Honor Roll is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire team," says Eric Leroux, MD, Chief Quality Officer, Eisenhower Health. “This recognition underscores our commitment to providing safe, effective, and compassionate care to our patients while addressing the critical public health issue of opioid misuse and addiction.”
For years, Eisenhower Health has worked diligently to develop comprehensive strategies to ensure the safe and effective use of opioids while prioritizing patient safety by adopting evidence-based practices that include:
• Enhanced Prescribing Protocols: Strict adherence to prescribing guidelines to minimize the risk of opioid misuse and addiction.
• Patient Education: Providing patients with thorough information about the risks and benefits of opioid therapy, as well as alternative pain management options.
• Integrated Pain Management Programs: Offering multidisciplinary approaches to pain management that reduce reliance on opioids.
• Monitoring and Follow-Up: Utilizing prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) and conducting regular follow-ups to ensure patient safety and adherence to treatment plans.
