Last week we got to visit the Hilbert Museum, located just off the campus of Chapman University, our son's alma mater. Great collection focuses on California artists of the last century (mostly). It's all curated by Gordon McClelland, who has written monographs on many the artists. Really fun shows of Millard Sheets, California artists on the edges of abstraction, and more current artists exploring the landscape and persona of Southern California. Followed it up with a short walk around the campus and a trip to the archery store in Fullerton.
My mother was 7 years old when the portrait I used as a starting point was made. Wonder if she had any idea of the places she would go and the things she would try. I never really thought of her as an adventurer, but looking through her stuff and seeing all the places she went (taking us too!) makes me think of her as much more so. Been an interesting project to be looking at her face for such a long time. Next step is a good frame for it.

Self-portrait 2023.
Went to see Red Earth Gaze, a show at Angel's Gate Cultural center that is an in depth look at Native American artworks of both a crew of men who set up the Elders' Gathering and a nice selection of contemporary artists who are following the path. There were 3 artists who talked about their work in the show, and all told very moving stories. The show closed yesterday, unfortunately.
Happy to get back in the studio for a week or so now, able to work on some pieces I started before I broke my ankle. Looking at photo dates, looks like I started this one back in May! Not sure if it has a title, but I do know it's painted in acrylic on canvas, and measures 41" x 53"

Second take on Janus, with name that came from my friend David Walker's band in the 80s. Pencil on paper, 9" x 6"
Janus is an ancient Roman god who symbolizes doorways and beginnings, usually depicted as having two faces. The month of January is named for him. This one is pencil on paper, 12" x 9", and I drew it this past week while stuck on the sofa with a broken ankle.
