Day 3 of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

One in six (16%) college women has been sexually abused in a dating relationship.

Violent relationships in adolescence can have serious ramifications by putting the victims at higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior and further domestic violence.

Being physically or sexually abused makes teen girls six times more likely to become pregnant and twice as likely to get a STI.

5 Ways to Beat Spring Allergies 03/11/2016

With spring around the corner, or in some ways already here, allergy season is starting up pretty soon. Here are some tips to help fight off allergies

Try to limit your time out doors. It may not be the best suggestion, but it really helps with managing allergies.

Start taking allergy medicines sooner rather than later. If you can start taking allergy medicine a week before the season starts, it'll already be in your system for when allergies hit.

Sometimes some more natural remedies can also help with fighting allergies, just be careful with them before you take them because some can have interactions with other medicine you take or even make your allergies worse.

Have a great spring break!

Are energy drinks actually bad for you?
There are things on both sides of the argument.

If consumed responsibly they aren't bad for you, however drinking a lot of them in a short time period can be really bad for you. Some of the most common problems with Energy drinks are that people become dehydrated easily when drinking them, so avoid using them as a work out drink because of caffeine's diuretic properties.

On a positive side They can often give you a short boost to help you finish up an assignment or get you through the morning.

If you are going to use that or coffee to help you thru finals, just remember to drink water, limit how much and remember to get some sleep.

As the stress of crunch week comes up, remember a small act of kindness can go a long way. Everyone else is having a stressful time. Remember to be friendly to those around you!

Wellness Wednesday tip:
This weeks tip is some exercising advice:

Make sure you stretch first before working out or playing any sports. This greatly reduces your chances of getting hurt.

Find some friends and form an intramural team. The Schumo center has a lot of different intramural sports, such as soccer, volleyball and softball. Keep an eye out at the gym or in the residence halls to see when sign ups take place

Change up work work outs. We all know leg days hurt, but don't just focus on legs, your upper and core is just as important. Also change it up between lifting and doing some cardio

Take advantage of some of the awesome fields. Get a game of Frisbee going on science field or start a kickball game with some of your floor mates on north field, or get some Woods apartments together to have a soccer game on Woods field

Bring a friend. A friend can help keep you motivated and keep you going to the gym.

Drinking more water
Change up what you eat, so skip past the Pizza and see what else there is.
Limit the amount of sugary and caffeinated beverages you drink
Don't skip meals, especially breakfast
Avoid junk food, eat healthy snack, but it is okay to indulge once and a while

Today's Thirsty Thursday tip is water.
What's so great about water, well we can't live without it. There has been much dispute as of late on how much water to drink, and whether it needs to be straight water or if it can be another beverage.
Water helps your body remove and get rid of toxins, as well as hydrate your body to help tackle the day.

What do blueberries, strawberries, apples, and oranges all have in common? They are all fruits.
So what's so great about fruits? Well fruits are a great source of Vitamins, like B and C, fiber, Minerals, like potassium, and some even have antioxidants, which help your body fight off unstable molecules and free radicals. Eating fruits have been shown to help reduce the risk you have of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and can even help protect you against certain forms of cancer.

Wellness Wednesday tip is how to eat meats properly.
Meat is a great source of protein, Vitamins and minerals, but what makes meat bad? If you eat too much meats with high amounts of saturated fats, it can lead to problems such as high cholesterol levels, which can lead to heart disease. Meat is really good for you if eaten in moderation.

Today's thirsty Thursday tip is how good is skim milk for you?
Skim milk may not be the best tasting of the milk, but that is often due to the much lower fat content in the Skim milk vs the whole milk, but that's not a bad thing.
However, skim milk contains all the same nutrients and minerals that whole milk has, so it makes for a suitable substitute. Skim milk also has less calories in it, Which makes it better for low calorie diets.
Skim milk also is high in whey protein, which is used to help build muscles, lower your risk of obesity, improve blood sugar levels, and lower your blood pressure. Also skim milk can help reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis.

Our Wellness Wednesday tip today is Sleeping.
A lot of college students are thinking what is sleep. Well sleep is this majestic place where for 6-8 hours your body can relax and catch up.
Sleep is extremely important to out lives. Some experts even weighed in on the importance of sleep.
Donna Arand, PhD, DABSM says that "lack of sleep impairs your ability to learn, remember, and process new facts." not sleeping properly can impact your grades and how well you are doing in your classes.

Some tips to get some more rest:
Set a bed time. It doesn't have to be set in stone like your parents had when you were younger, but going to bed roughly the same time every night and waking up at nearly the same time can help to boost your health.
The occasional all nighter aren't terrible, but they should be kept to a minimum.

10/01/2015

Thirsty Thursday Tip:
Thursday tips are going to be based upon whats a good thing to grab when you are thirsty.
Herbal teas, and hot tea in general is a great drink to grab, and you can easily make it in your room if you are out of bonus bucks. Hots teas and herbal teas help you relax and can help manage your stress. To make a mug in your room, fill a mug 3/4 of the way to the top and put it in the microwave for 2:30-3 minutes, and then put the tea bag in and sweeten to taste.
