I show my way of getting the ideas for my compositions. I LISTEN to the sounds around me and then put line patterns that match them. From this matrix of lines and spaces a story or scene or figures begin to take shape.

ART EDUCATION AT GAPS

My newest student has challenged himself to compose 3 images of birds. We spoke yesterday about how we can capture a bird's joy, aggression and even fear thru how we compose its movement.

We discussed how an artist who speaks design can actually compose the relationships between birds. That thru design we trigger feelings and memories in the viewer. Sensations of love, friendship, jealously, possessiveness and being overbearing which are what birds share.

Then we pushed it up a notch. The challenge of all challenges. The challenge I am enthusiastic to coach him thru. This challenge will lead him thru the greatest artistic discovery of his life. When he achieves this ... the great artists of the past will get up from their table and come sit at his.

The challenge to compose the songs of the birds.

How can we compose images that trigger in us the sound of warning, urgency, playfulness, love, peace, inquisitiveness and most annoying of them all ... the car alarm song!

Oh yeah baby! I clearly see the path for me to guide him down for him to find this sacred power. I am so excited to work with him and have him shine bright as the sun in his new artistic grace.

In closing, I was reading The Painter's Keys blog, and read this quote by Monet.

“It really is appallingly difficult to do something which is complete in every respect, and I think most people are content with mere approximations. But I intend to battle on, scrape off and start again. I would love to paint the way a bird sings.”
