Collection of Haiku: A Collective Poem About Downtown
Join us in creating a collective poem about Redding that is a collection of haiku. The final collection will be read by a range of writers (maybe you?) and filmed by Tyler Faires.
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to add 1-3 haiku on the subject: Dear Downtown Redding.
What’s a haiku again? There are at least 6 forms that we think of as haiku, all of which you can explore here. Traditional haiku, the original form practiced in Japan, usually consisted of three lines with 5-7-5 syllables each. In its traditional form, haiku focuses on nature or a season, with an emphasis on a single moment or image and includes a cutting word- kireji- that creates a pause or break between different parts of the poem. In the article (https://poemanalysis.com/poetry-explained/types-of-haiku/) you can find other variations on the haiku form.
What can you write about? A favorite spot, something you have seen downtown that touched you, changes in downtown, downtown during different seasons, festivals times of day, an encounter you have downtown. . .There is no right or wrong way. Jump in and help us create a film that gets people thinking about writing and poetry and encourages them to write as well. Write your haiku here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/19vT3suS9QejECzoq1dCmaJDMai48tdpuX0YziooD15Y/edit?usp=sharing) and include your name.

Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Fresno writer and professor Lee Herrick as the state’s tenth poet laureate in November 2022. “Each poet laureate, typically, is asked to advocate for poetry, educate and bring poetry to as many communities as he or she or they can,” Herrick said. “That can take the shape of readings or talks... in everything from a grade school to a university to a prison to a book club — and everything in between.”
Herrick is the author of three poetry collections, including “Scar and Flower,” a finalist for the 2020 Northern California Book Award, as well as “Gardening Secrets of the Dead” and “This Many Miles From Desire.”
Born in South Korea, Herrick was adopted when he was 10 months old by parents from Northern California. Formerly Fresno’s poet laureate, he teaches at Fresno City College and in the MFA program at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe.
