Robin Bray is KnotWright! She works with wood and imagination to create utilitarian artwork.
Headed to the AAW Convention in Portland, Oregon on Memorial Day weekend and realized I don’t have any business cards! 😳 So, I got a few quick new ones today! Phew!
It’s 95 outside and 74 in the shop! Woo Hoo! Love it!
New blog post is up! 🌟
Despite health challenges, I've crafted a unique, off-center combination bud vase/ candlestick holder from a Bradford Pear tree pruning. Big life changes are coming—more time for creativity ahead. Check out the full story and see my latest creation in the shop! Read more:

Well, that’s KnotWright! I got some walnut from a friend the other day. Though I knew this piece had a couple of cracks, I thought it might hold. I was wrong! Luckily, I wear safety gear and stay out of the flight path of the wood when it does let go! I guess I still need to paint a target on the opposite wall for such events! Rule of thumb, never turn a piece of wood bigger than you want to get hit with! 😬
Hey all you woodworkers out there…this is a great reminder for those already into the hobby, and a great lesson on many of the important things to know if you’re a beginner. It’s the best one-stop video I’ve seen for beginners by far. Check it out!

Here’s a fun one…molding pen blanks. But, the really fun part is removing them from the mold! 😂
Finished the redwood bowl! Checkout my post from March 2nd. This piece of redwood started out at over 40 #! After twice turning it and drying the rough-turned bowl in the microwave and in the house for 19 days, it lost over 1/2 its weight. I finally finished turning it yesterday. It is now 3/4 # and 10.75” in diameter! That’s KnotWright! 😉
With my sick kitty, I didn’t get much done in the shop this weekend. But, I did play a little with this experimental pine cone and resin dish. What do you think?
Well, best laid plans…snowstorm canceled my dinner theater plans. But, I wouldn’t have been able to go anyway, my little Dottie has been sick for 3 days and had to stay in the hospital last night. Thankfully, she’s home now and so far looking much better.
Of course, the best way for me to beat the stress of waiting was to do a little woodworking. Here’s a nice rough turned bowl that I’ll wait a while to dry then finish turning it in several months, if it doesn’t crack too badly. In the meantime, look how beautiful this fresh cut redwood is!
This is an excellent and enlightening article about the nature of wood.
Understanding wood grain - FineWoodworking Green wood is soft and fun to work, but it has another, less obvious benefitâone that chairmaker Peter Galbert realized when he first started working with it. Parts riven from a log are worked very differently from sawn boards. Because the fibers run the full length of each part, there is no gr...
I love this story. It exemplifies the circle of life and the transformation of the great old tree that will find new life as it is repurposed into dozens of new, beautiful, useful items.
It also exemplifies some of what I discuss in recent blog posts. If you haven’t checked the blog out yet, I invite you to do so. And, if you have - thank you, and make sure you’re up to date!

In 1945, Tom Gosse discovered a small tree in his backyard that had been run over with a mower.
The tree began to grow back, sprouting three shoots. A neighbor suggested to favor the best-growing sprout and prune the other two.
That suggestion is worth thousands of dollars to Gosse today. Gosse, who turns 86 in February, has cared for the trees since he was 7. Gosse had tree harvesters and loggers cut down that tree and two other old walnut trees on his property in January. Each will fetch an estimated $10,000 as lumber.
The straight, healthy trunk is perfect for making planks and thin walnut veneer. At about 110 inches around, the tree trunks each contain about 800 board feet of high-quality, usable wood. At about $14 per board foot, it was time to cut the trees down.
Trees can provide value beyond their lumber. They add curb appeal, help keep homes cool in the summer, prevent erosion and create a windbreak.
Gosse said he plans to plant an English walnut in the front yard this next year to replace one of the trees, adding it will be up to someone else to care for it and harvest it.
We added some new t-shirts to the shop today, the kanji symbol for "Wood"; a Woman using power tools harkening back to Rosie the Riveter in red, white and blue; and the Kanji symbols of "Women" and "Power" combined to make a nice pattern. In today's blog entry I reflect on the use of hand tools in woodworking. The journey with the redwood, from the initial challenges to the eventual creation of a cherished vase, encapsulates the spirit of woodworking. It's a narrative that I hope inspires others to embrace the process, with all its trials and triumphs, in the pursuit of making meaningful things.
🌿✨ From the Heart of Nature to Your Hands ✨🌿
Hey everyone! I've been on a remarkable journey, transforming whispers of the past and gifts from nature into pieces that not only adorn your space but also enrich your daily life. 🌳➡️🎨
I recently shared the story of a majestic redwood – a tale of legacy, craftsmanship, and the beautiful cycle of life. From facing the tough decision of a friend having to cut down a cherished tree, to giving this grand being a new life through art, it's a narrative that touches on the deep, resonant connections we share with the natural world around us.
👉 But that's not all – each piece I create carries a tale, a blend of utility, beauty, and a whisper of the stories that wood can tell. These aren't just items; they're passages into tales of transformation and endurance, designed to be cherished for generations.
I invite you to dive into these stories, to see the world through the grains of wood that I've had the honor of shaping. Join me on this journey, and let's explore together the beauty of crafting with purpose, sustainability, and heart.
