CHP Safety Alert: Prepare for Rain and Snow Season
With inclement weather conditions approaching, the California Highway Patrol urges all drivers to exercise caution and follow these safety guidelines to stay safe on the roads.
Slow Down: Wet and icy roads reduce traction. Drive slower to allow more time to react.
Increase Following Distance: Leave extra space between your vehicle and others to prevent collisions in low visibility or slippery conditions.
Check Your Tires and Wipers: Ensure your tires have adequate tread, and your windshield wipers are in good working order along with ongoing vehicle maintenance.
Use Headlights: Turn on your headlights when visibility is reduced by rain, snow, or fog.
Avoid Sudden Movements: Accelerate, brake, and turn gently to avoid skidding.
Stay Informed: Check weather and road conditions before traveling. Allow extra time and consider alternate routes if necessary.
Your safety is our priority. Let’s work together to keep California’s roads safe. For road conditions, visit Caltrans QuickMaps.
Stay alert, stay safe, and be prepared!

This morning, the Redding Communications Center received a call from a concerned motorist about a high speed motorcycle traveling over 100 MPH, lane splitting, and nearly causing crashes on I-5 southbound in the Redding area.
Dispatchers quickly and precisely relayed the information to our road units who located the motorcycle and observed it traveling 112 MPH! Subsequent to the enforcement stop, the rider was determined to be unlicensed (No M1) and recently ticketed for speeding. The totality of these circumstances made it an easy decision for our officers to impound the motorcycle and issue a citation.
A huge THANK YOU to the motorist, for reporting the motorcycle, and helping us prevent crashes which could lead to serious injury.

On the morning of September 12, 2024, local resident Matthew Hall of Hall’s Heating and Air Conditioning was driving eastbound on SR-44, west of Victor Ave. Hall observed a dust cloud along the eastbound center median east of his location. He observed a vehicle traveling east impacting the concrete center median wall at freeway speeds. Hall determined the driver of the vehicle was in distress. Knowing the vehicle in distress could travel across the eastbound lanes, possibly injuring or killing other motorists, Hall disregarded his own safety, drove past the vehicle in distress and positioned his vehicle directly in front of the vehicle. Hall slowed his vehicle causing the vehicle in distress to impact the rear of his vehicle. Hall came to a stop with the distressed vehicle still in drive pushing his vehicle forward. Hall exited his vehicle and observed an elderly female in the driver seat unresponsive. Hall broke the right rear window with his fist gaining access to the cab and turned off the engine. Hall’s quick thinking, and decisive action was the catalyst to not only saving the driver's life but saving those who may have been injured during this event. Matthew was awarded a Community Service Award from the California Highway Patrol Redding Area for his bravery and selfless act of courage to protect the lives of others during this traumatic event.
Redding Area Captain M. Pizzi, Lieutenant B. Lale, Sergeant B. Cooke, and Officer J. Estes presented Hall this award at his business in Redding and were joined by Hall’s family.
One of our own, motor officer Estes, had the privilege of participating in this year’s Redding PD motorcycle competition. Estes took ☝️ in his class. Not many can maneuver a Harley like Estes can….we think his mustache provides more stability.
Thank you for hosting a great event and allowing the CHP Redding area to participate.

Many locals and frequent travelers through Shasta County know Officer Morton due to the fact he is ALWAYS out and about. If you see him, help me congratulate him on a job well done--just make sure you are not speeding when you see him…
On this important anniversary, we recognize the trailblazing women who first entered the CHP 50 years ago and the many women who have come after to make important contributions that help keep California safe. On September 30, 1974, a group of 40 women reported to the CHP Academy as part of the Women Traffic Officer Program (WTOP), launched as a trial. Of those women, 27 completed Academy training and were sworn in as CHP officers on January 16, 1975. Since that day, women have served in every aspect of the CHP, from riding motorcycles and flying aircraft to taking on detective roles. Northern Division would like to thank all the woman that have served Northern California for the last 50 years.

In 2024, the Redding CHP Area has had numerous vehicle crashes resulting in the loss of precious human lives.
Some of the common factors that led to these tragic crashes include:
1) Excessive speed
2) Impaired driving (alcohol/drugs)
3) Unsafe lane changes/turning movements
4) Reckless driving
While the Redding CHP Area strives to ensure California is the safest place to live, work, and travel, we cannot accomplish our mission of saving lives by ourselves. We need your help to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes. We are confident you have witnessed people driving unsafely—many times committing the very violations that have led to crashes that cost people their lives.
Therefore, if you see someone driving unsafely on the freeway or unincorporated county roadways, please call 911 or the public dispatch line at (530) 242-3210 to report what you see. When possible, report the unsafe driving behavior you observed along with the location, license plate, and vehicle make/model/color. We will do our best to locate the reported vehicle and take appropriate action.
The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security. With your partnership, we enhance our effectiveness and make our community safer to travel in. Thanks in advance for your help.
