Why now is a great time for tourists to return to Maui - The Points Guy 08/09/2024

It's been one year since a wildfire devastated the historic town of Lahaina, on the beautiful island of Maui. While damage and debris has been cleared and plans are underway for rebuilding the area impacted by the fire, much of the island remained untouched by the blaze. With an economy heavily reliant on tourism, the island has experienced hardship as it has worked to rebuild after the fire.

Maui welcomes the return of visitors, and smaller crowds and cheaper flights make it a great time to visit! Take a look at this story by The Points Guy for some inspiration: https://thepointsguy.com/news/maui-great-time-to-go.

A visit to Maui is a great way to support another community that has been impacted by wildfire. Let the Redding Regional Airport be your gateway to Maui. With flights from Redding to San Francisco and Los Angeles on United and Seattle on Alaska Airlines, a trip to paradise is just a few steps away.

Why now is a great time for tourists to return to Maui - The Points Guy Maui wants travelers to return to the island and revive the tourism sector. And with plenty of cheap deals on flights and hotels, now is not a bad time to visit.

Please find the latest Redding Regional Airport press release below:

Redding Regional Airport (RDD) staff has been hard at work supporting continued growth amid some recent, unexpected changes at the airport.

“We’re in a season of change at the Redding Regional Airport, and while change can be challenging, it can also be a growth opportunity. We see a future with more opportunities for travelers in and out of the Redding Regional Airport. RDD continues to grow thanks to consistent support from travelers throughout Northern California and the hard work of our airport staff,” says Steve Bade, Assistant City Manager with the City of Redding.

-FAA Funding Update-
The City of Redding has diligently worked with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) staff to fund the Redding Regional Airport (RDD) Runway Rehabilitation Project. The project includes updates to the runway, taxiway connectors, blast pad (runway stopway), pavement markings, runway LED lighting, electrical improvements, and sign legends. The FAA found the project to meet the eligibility and justification requirements, and the project scope was appropriate and sized correctly for RDDs needs.

The FAA recently announced that it cannot provide funding for the RDD Runway Rehabilitation Project due to funding challenges on several high-priority projects. City staff continues to work with our FAA partners and Redding Airport Constructors, the project’s sole bidder, to consider alternative approaches, including phasing the Runway Rehabilitation Project with a portion of Fiscal Year 2024 and 2025 FAA funds.

“The City and FAA have established a great partnership, and as City staff works through this process, we will keep the community updated,” says Bade.

For more updates, please refer to the project website: www.cityofredding.gov/runwayrehab.

-Avelo Airlines-
“We’ve heard the disappointment from the community regarding Avelo Airlines’ decision to leave Redding, and we want to assure the community that every measure was taken to continue Avelo’s service here. Unfortunately, the other potential options for ground handlers couldn’t fit into Avelo’s cost model,” says Bade.

Redding Regional Airport is one of many markets Avelo is leaving. In early July, Avelo announced six other market exits.

RDD continues to grow thanks to consistent support from travelers throughout Northern California. Passengers can travel between Redding and the Los Angeles/Hollywood area on United Airlines through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Additionally, RDD continues to provide flight service to and from San Francisco through United Airlines and Seattle through Alaska Airlines.

RDD is actively pursuing additional flight services to other destinations.

-Airport Manager-
In May 2024, the City of Redding partnered with a consulting firm to find the ideal candidate for the Airport Manager position. The job posting closed on May 26, 2024. Twenty-three qualified applications from around the country were received. The City and consultants are in the second round of the interview process and will provide the community with an update in August 2024.

Bade says, “The airport has several strong contenders for this role, and we’re confident that once a candidate is selected, we’ll be able to hit the ground running, bringing even more exciting changes to the Redding Regional Airport.”

An oral report on the Redding Regional Airport will be given at the upcoming Redding City Council Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 16th, 2024.

06/26/2024

Effective Monday, August 26, 2024, Avelo Airlines will discontinue its airline services at the Redding Regional Airport (RDD). The decision was made after the ground handler—which provides logistical support such as ticketing, luggage handling, and aircraft marshaling to and from the gate—made a business decision to pull out of California entirely.

While the Redding Regional Airport has seen consistent growth in air service over the last few years, the airport remains among the smaller ones in California. Avelo Airlines will continue to serve other markets in the state but was left to make a hard decision for an airport that has maintained very high passenger loads for each Avelo flight during the airline’s time at the Redding Regional Airport.

A representative with Avelo Airlines has said, “We recently learned the business partner supporting Avelo’s airport operations at Redding Regional Airport (RDD) will no longer be serving RDD. As a result, we’ve made the decision to cancel Avelo’s route between RDD and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), effective August 26. This decision also enables us to better utilize our resources elsewhere in Avelo’s system.”

“Avelo Airlines has been a solid partner in providing low-cost air service in and out of Redding since 2021 and had a successful run here,” says Lauren Ford, Assistant Airports Manager with the Redding Regional Airport. “We remain hopeful that after the operational challenges are resolved, we can look for a return of Avelo service to Redding Regional Airport.”

RDD continues to grow thanks to consistent support from travelers throughout Northern California. Passengers can still travel between Redding and the Los Angeles / Hollywood area on United Airlines through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). RDD continues to provide flight service to and from Los Angeles and San Francisco through United Airlines and Seattle through Alaska Airlines.

“We encourage the community to continue to support the airport as strongly as it has over the last three years,” says Ford. “That support continues to build momentum for our local airport and helps to inspire other airlines to consider bringing air service to Redding.”

Along the way, Avelo has unlocked a new era of convenience, choice and competition by flying unserved routes to primarily underserved communities across the country. All Avelo flights are nonstop and on almost every route at least one airport is a small, easy to use airport. This makes every Avelo journey a smooth, easy and enjoyable experience.

Unlike most other airlines, Avelo Customers can always change or cancel their itineraries with no extra fees. Additionally, families can travel with ease knowing every child 13 and under will always be automatically seated with an accompanying adult at no additional cost.

Additionally, Avelo offers advanced seat assignments for sale. One third of its seats are extra leg room seats, ranging from 32 inches to more than 36 inches, offering a more comfortable experience for Customers who value more space. In addition to advance seat assignments, Avelo offers several unbundled travel-enhancing options that give Customers the flexibility to pay only for what they value, including priority boarding, checked bags, carry-on overhead bags, and bringing a pet in the cabin.

Avelo is distinguished by its industry-leading reliability. In 2023, the airline achieved the lowest flight cancellation rate in the U.S. airline industry and ranked #2 in on-time reliability. These results are based on Anuvu’s third-party data platform (the same company and platform utilized by The Wall Street Journal for the publication’s annual best and worst airline ranking, which excluded Avelo as well as other airlines in its coverage that did not meet the publication’s size threshold).

The City of Redding Department of Airports will host a series of public workshops regarding the airport master plan. The first meeting will be held this Thursday, October 26th, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at Redding City Hall.

These public workshops will help provide systematic guidelines for the Airport’s overall maintenance, development, and operation. The Master Plan is a proactive document that identifies and plans for future facility needs well in advance so that Airport management can coordinate project approvals, design, financing, and construction to avoid inadequacy in airport facilities.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires certain airports, including the Redding Regional Airport, to maintain an FAA-approved Airport Layout Plan (ALP). The FAA uses this plan to support grant funding for eligible capital projects. The Master Plan and ALP were last updated in 2015. FAA recommends these be updated every five to ten years or as necessary to address changes at the airport and/or in the aviation industry. Redding Airport has experienced significant increases in passenger levels in recent years, and this Master Plan is necessary to address those changes.

A national aviation consulting firm specializing in airport planning studies, Coffman Associates, is conducting the study. The study will take approximately 18 months, followed by agency reviews and approvals.

Redding Area Bus Authority has added a new route to the Redding Regional Airport! Read about it and all of the other improvements RABA is making to public transportation in the City of Redding.

The Redding Area Bus Authority (RABA) is making service enhancements starting Monday, October 2, 2023! These enhancements will include adding technologies for passenger convenience and a new route to the VA Clinic, the Veterans Home, and the Redding Regional Airport.

RABA continues to find ways to make public transportation accessible, convenient, and attractive. Starting Monday, October 2, 2023, a new Route 15 Flex Route will begin to operate Monday through Saturday between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.. This route will operate between Canby Transfer Center, next to Mt. Shasta Mall, and Redding Regional Airport via Knighton Road and Hilltop Drive in Redding. There will be direct service to Save Mart on Churn Creek Road, the VA Clinic, and the Veterans Home. Adding these destinations to the RABA roster will diversify public transportation options in the community.

This new route will allow for the route to flex off-route within ¾ mile radius for those who want to have the bus come closer to them. The route will also have timed connections to flights at Redding Regional Airport, which currently has minimal ridesharing opportunities.

Additional changes include the following:

🔹 Demand Response service for persons with disabilities who cannot ride RABA buses or access a RABA bus stop. This service will expand to serving destinations along the new Route 15.

🔹 Route 17 – School Express will provide service between Shasta College and Downtown Transit Center via Shasta View Drive in both directions on weekdays only.

🔹 Route 18 - Crosstown Express will have a new schedule and operate on Saturdays. All Route 18 trips will turn into Route 15 trips at Canby Transfer Center.

🔹 Anderson Commuter will be known as Route 12X, School Express will be known as Route 17, Crosstown Express will be known as Route 18, Beach Bus will be known as Route 19, and Burney Express will be known as Route 299X. Signage, brochures, and maps will be updated to reflect these numbers.

🔹Small buses will be used on Routes 15, 17, and 18 to match capacity with actual demand.

On the technological front, RABA has added free Wi-Fi on all fixed-route buses, as well as at the Downtown Redding Passenger Terminal. RABA is testing transit signal priority in the City of Redding at 15 intersections to help keep the fixed routes on time, launching mobile ticketing via the Token Transit app. The goal is to allow passenger fares to be paid with a credit card or pre-paid credit card and to add tracking for passengers to see buses in real time. Passengers can use online systems, including the newly relaunched www.rabaride.com, the Transit app, the Moovit app, and Google, Apple, and Bing maps to plan their trips. The Transit and Moovit apps will be most helpful in planning bus trips, seeing buses in real-time, paying transit fares, booking an Uber or Lyft trip, and booking a Bird Scooter ride. The apps will also soon have the capability to unlock Redding Bikeshare bicycles.

“We are so pleased to add all of these service enhancements to RABA,” says John Andoh, Transit General Manager for the Redding Area Bus Authority. “We are trying to be creative and think outside the box by making public transportation clean, accessible, reliable, efficient, and safe. By adding new routes and technology, we can help RABA increase passenger trips.”

“Since the VA Clinic moved to south Redding and the Veterans Home of California built a new facility, we have been trying to find a cost-effective solution to get public transportation to these facilities,” says Mark Mezzano, chairman of the RABA Board of Directors. “We were able to build a budget for the service, seek and receive funding from the Shasta Regional Transportation Agency and Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and now we finally have public transit to these locations to help our veterans access care and services.”
