It’s heartbreaking to see moms and professionals fighting each other over whether breast or formula feeding is “best.” Breastfeeding advocates state that breast milk is always best, while formula-feeding moms say “fed is best” to stress that what matters is nourishing their babies.

But the real winner in this fight?

The formula companies.

While we battle over who’s right, these corporations rake in BILLIONS in profits, quietly escaping scrutiny.

Instead of holding them accountable, we stay divided. We miss the chance to demand better ingredients in formula, lower prices, and consistent access free from recalls - and formula companies profit from our division, making billions while moms bear the burden, both emotionally and financially.

This isn’t just about formula versus breastfeeding.

We need to recognize the deeper problem—the lack of adequate maternity leave and postpartum support for mothers plus the corporate greed of formula companies lobbying for things to stay the exact way they are now!

Formula companies BENEFIT from our lack of maternity leave and lack of access to skilled lactation support.

Lack of support, pain, financial situation and having to return to work are often used as a reason why moms had switched to formula.

But instead of fighting over who has it harder, we should unite and demand real change from the government. Moms shouldn’t be forced into impossible decisions because of a broken system.

The fight shouldn’t be with each other—it should be for policies like paid leave, workplace support for breastfeeding, and access to affordable formula when needed.

This isn’t about who’s right—breastfeeding or formula feeding. It’s about uniting as moms who want the best for their babies, no matter how they’re fed.

It’s time to focus on holding the corporations accountable and pushing for better support, not just for ourselves, but for every family.

Let's talk about expected weight gain again!

Our last post certainly sparked some conversation about what is or is not considered "normal" in our healthcare system.

Babies being able to maintain their OWN PERCENTILE is what we are looking for. Even if this means they are smaller, bigger, or right in the middle! Have a kiddo in the 60 percentile range? Amazing, we want them to hang out there. Is your little one teeny and maintains 9% well AMAZING they are MAINTAINING THAT and that is what we are looking for.

In order to maintain their percentile, regardless of the percentile the weight gain discussed on the second page of this post is what would be expected!

Check-ins with your IBCLC the first few months, even when things seem to be going well can be incredibly helpful in monitoring and having this reassurance. Weight gain or percentiles are often the first clue that things may be awry and you can get the help you are needing 🩷

Your baby's weight gain and maintenance of their percentile is important!

Often times parents are told "as long as baby is gaining it is fine", but that simply is not true.
There are times where we should be monitoring weight closely if your little one is not gaining or maintaining their percentile.

The looks from clients when we say this are comical, BUT it really is a great explanation!

How many times have you been asked: "How does your baby do in tummy time?" or "Are you doing tummy time?"

We are here to remind your YOUR BABY HAS FOUR SIDES that are all equally as important to be comfortable on and spend time on!

They have:
Their Belly
Their Back
Their RIGHT Side
Their LEFT Side

Your baby should be able to exist in ALL FOUR planes of their body without struggling, discomfort, or trying to escape out of it! We want them to be comfy on ALL FOUR SIDES of their body.

Start with just a few seconds on each side and slowly roll your baby from their back, to their side for side-lying play, then to their belly (rolling in and out of tummy time is phenomenal for your little one), then to their other side, and back on their backs!
Make it fun, have some hanging toys, contrast cards, or get low and put your face in their face. Talk them through each movement, ASK YOUR BABY how they are doing and LISTEN to them!

Pause on each side and see how they tolerate it! Lack of tolerance or difficulty in these positions could be contributing to any feeding issues you are having.

Add some intentional play and movement into your little ones awake time, slowly increase and build tolerance, check in with your IBCLC or body worker if you notice that your little one has a preference OR lack of tolerance for one of these positions for more help!

𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐤:
After each pumping session, take the milk you have pumped and put it into your container (mason jar, pitcher, something with a lid is great!).
During your next session, take all of the milk you have pumped and repeat the process!
You can then make your baby's bottles directly from this pitcher/storage container as they are ready and no fumbling with storage bags!

Any excess milk not used the following day can be bagged and labeled to be stored in the freezer.

Figure out how many ounces of water and how many scoops of formula you will need to make an entire days worth of formula for your baby.
*Remember each formula has its own directions for water to powder ratio, follow exactly!

Feed Responsively:
Breastfeed your baby every 2-3 hours or whenever they show signs of hunger, such as rooting or turning their head towards your breast, sucking on their fists or fingers, making smacking noises or licking lips, or becoming more alert or fussy.
-If your baby is not latching or having a hard time latching and removing milk do not forget to support your milk supply by pumping or hand expressing while you are waiting for your appt with your IBCLC to help!

Skin to Skin:
Hold the baby against your bare chest, with the baby ideally only in a diaper, to promote bonding and breastfeeding. Use a blanket to keep the baby warm, and a robe can be helpful for you. Other members of the family can also do skin to skin with baby!

5-5-5 Rule:
5 Days in the Bed: Spend the first 5 days at home laying in bed, focusing on resting, skin-to-skin bonding with your baby, breastfeeding, napping, and reading. Allow yourself to be pampered by having meals and water brought to you in your postpartum space.
5 Days on the Bed: During the next 5 days, start sitting up and doing activities on the bed. Continue skin-to-skin and cuddle time with your baby to promote bonding and breastfeeding. Spend quality time with older children with activities like reading, puzzles, or coloring, while avoiding overexertion.
5 Days Around the Bed: Focus on resting but gradually start moving around the bed during these 5 days. Engage in light activities like folding laundry (or task someone else with this), but limit standing to 30 minutes at a time and listen to your body's cues.

Avoid Swaddling:
You can use swaddling as a calming tool if needed to soothe the baby. However, it's important to unswaddle after the baby has calmed down to allow for natural movement and breastfeeding cues. Letting the baby be unswaddled allows for baby to natural unwind any body tension from the birth process as well.
