The Witness is the part of us that can pause and observe our thoughts as they are happening. Any time we have the space and awareness to notice our thoughts is a gift to be honored and practiced. The Witness acknowledges the distinct separation between our higher Self and the automatic patterns of our conditioning. The Witness reminds us:
1. that we are not our thoughts;
2. that with awareness, practice, and intentionality, we reframe our thoughts and what we make them mean, which can shift our entire experience of life.
You are not your trauma or your past. While your experiences certainly carry influence and have the potential to shape your view of yourself and your world, they are not innately who you are. They are not your identity.
Recognizing that distinction is key in being able to direct your life path with intention as opposed to being at the mercy of your conditioning.
You may not have been able to control your circumstances, but you have so much power in this moment. You have the agency to choose how you interpret and integrate the wisdom of those experiences into your own growth, in the meaning you choose to ascribe to it all, and in the stories you choose tell yourselves and others about it. That space of agency is where your identity is created.
When you’re stuck in negative thought patterns or experiencing challenging emotions, connecting to Mother Nature is the best medicine.
When you immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and sensations of nature, you are promoting present-moment awareness. Even simply gazing at a beautiful landscape can calm your nervous system.
Breathing fresh air can help oxygenate your body, enhancing brain function and reducing feelings of tension and anxiety.
Our inherent connection with nature is deeply rooted in our evolutionary history, so it’s no surprise that being with it helps us reconnect to ourselves and our humanity.
Our minds tend to categorize and divide, assess and judge. When you lean into the feelings in your heart space—that place of connection and gratitude—as opposed to the analytical mind, you’ll find the hope and ultimately the clarity you’ve been craving. It’s a practice that’s worth the effort.
The next time you’re in a negative thought loop, stop. Take a moment to notice it, and come back to the present moment. Notice your body. Feel into your heart and see what opens up.
Being a person of power requires personal responsibility — acknowledging and accepting that each of us has the ability to shape our own life.
Since we never get to a place where we can completely control our circumstances, our true power lies in being at choice about how we respond to the things that happen to us.
Whether they’re good, bad, traumatizing, neutral, etc. — we are accountable for how we choose to react and we can choose empowered perspectives instead of blaming someone else for our state.
It’s about cultivating presence and conscious awareness (instead of being in a default reaction mode), and intentionally choosing how we want to relate events occurring in our lives.
When practiced, this simple mindset shift can have profound impacts on your well being.
One of the best things about healing is that it isn’t just for you. It’s for everyone in your world, particularly those closest to you.
They not only get a better version of you, they also get an example of what doing the work looks like in real time — and evidence that it’s worth it.
I believe that (as we encounter greater awareness and tools around our traumas) it is our responsibility to learn, grow, heal, and ideally love more fully than the generation before us. It’s been humbling and awe-inspiring to see that transformation within my own family.
Working toward our life goals requires a few things like clarity and focus that don’t always come naturally. We can be overly detailed and rigid, or too broad and general. Some of us can get lost in the “how” while others aren’t even sure how to define what they truly want.
Whether you’re decorating a room, writing a paper, starting a business, or seeking a new romance, you’re creating in tandem with the Intelligence of Life — and in relation to your environment (i.e., not in a vacuum). For this collaboration to be successful, you have to be fluid and flexible in the process.
Things may not happen exactly the way you expect or envision, but that doesn’t mean you’re on the wrong path. When you let go and allow for those adjustments, you give yourself the freedom to shift direction based on the feedback you’re getting both internally and externally. That’s how you stay on your right path. It’s all about being focused yet unattached.
The more rigid you are about how to achieve the outcome (and what it needs to look like), the harder it is to achieve. Surrendering control is key to navigating (and fueling) the organic flow of the process, while building resilience along the way.
Anytime you’re spaced out, dissociated, or distracted, you’re not in the present moment. This occurrence stems from unhealed wounds that keep us from being grounded in the moment.
When we’re stuck in a cycle of replaying our past hurts, we are interpreting what’s possible or what’s real based on the traumatic event. Unhealed wounds take away our ability to choose. They limit our imagination.
In contrast, presence doesn’t deny or resist what is — it accepts and recognizes it without judgment. If you have any questions about whether it’s worthwhile to do the work of healing, I hope this drives home the answer.
For me, a lack of sensation and foggy eyesight are some telltale signs of not being present. What are yours? The more present I am, the more aware I am of what is happening within me, my environment, and with the people around me. Getting grounded starts with simply noticing that you’re not, observing your body and your surroundings, and gently bringing yourself back to the present moment.

This is my newest blog on Unblocking Yourself From Indecision. We all struggle with indecision from time to time. For some, that experience can occur more often and more intensely than for others. The fear of making a “wrong decision” can be overwhelming to the point of complete inaction. We’ve all made mistakes in the past; it’s how we learn and grow. But for those of us who are highly self-critical, the pain of those mistakes can stay with us and keep us stuck in fear of repeating it.
When we look a little closer, the loop of indecision is actually an activated state of anxiety that stems from fear. It’s a fight or flight response that comes up with any attempt to push outside of your comfort zone (e.g., pursuing a new career path; moving to a new city; whether or not to stay in or leave a relationship). Even when it’s something we know we want, like following our dreams, taking bold risks can be scary for our nervous system. This is such a powerful truth. There is no other person in your life that has more impact on you than you do.
When we have unhealed wounds we lose awareness of this. Trauma creates an experience of impotent helplessness. As we heal we reclaim the power to shape our own lives.
Healing is a form of growing and all of Life supports and is about growth. The support is limitless. We simply need to choose to step on the path and support shows up.
Become the author of your story! It's worth it.

Simple as that. We can all do it! Sometimes we get into the idea that what we have is based on worthiness. But what if it's about commitment and the willingness to resolve our inner conflict about having what we want?
What if what stops you is the way you talk to yourself, the stories you tell about life? What if there is a way to change it? Are you willing to look inside? Are you willing to be present with the places you don't l like in yourself, be compassionate with them, change, if that is what it takes to create the life you want?

Good feelings and bad ones are a way we talk to ourselves. Do an experiment... Take a minute to really feel and ask you yourself what is my body telling me? Listen and see how your feelings, instincts inform you.

The adventure that is life. There they go, courageous in their exploration of the unknown, and they don't even know it. That is the gift of innocence, a feeling of safety in the face of the unknown and mysterious.
We need a bit of that to be present and able to be intimate with ourselves, others, and life. It's a part of loving.
When we have unhealed wounds we often also have the loss of innocence. That makes it very hard to be intimate, to risk love, and be with the mystery of life. As we heal those wounds, that changes. Our resiliency, our ability to be intimate and receive increases. Suddenly the unknown becomes a place of play and love.
Healing those all wounds is worth it! You are worth it. We are worth it.

Growth, change, and love. So much love!
She has changed so much in the last year, during this pandemic.
She is beautiful. She stands fiercely for what she believes is right. So bold and so direct in all the ways she expresses herself. Yet, somehow at the same time, incredibly sensitive, shy, and gentle.
So much courage. Who she is demands courage of me.
Looking in a mirror...
This has been a big life lesson for me. What if balance is the point of life and not an achievement? I wonder what our world would look like if that was our collective goal. Can you imagine it, a culture that is driven by the need to support striving for fulfillment and balance, rather than struggles to acquire?

Are there ways you could struggle less and rest in the goodness of your life?
To go inside and quiet the mind is to cultivate presence.
One of the gifts of cultivating presence is:
You discover you know much more than you think you know and that you can learn what you don't know.
Taking the time to anchor in your own authenticity gives you freedom. Anchor within yourself by spending time with your own sensations and emotions, what they mean to you, and honestly acting on them. The better you know yourself the freer you will be. That's a gift.
