Feeling overwhelmed or anxious? Take a minute to control your breathing. Scientific studies show that controlling your breathing can instantly help manage stress.

A common technique is 4-7-8 breathing. To begin, get in a comfortable seated position and place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth.

• Breathe out, emptying your lungs of air
• Breathe in gently through the nose for 4 seconds
• Hold the breath for a count of 7 seconds
• Exhale forcefully through the mouth, pressing the lips and making a “whoosh” sound, for 8 seconds
• Repeat the cycle up to 4 times

Neuroscientist and author Wendy Suzuki spoke on a recent Ted Talk about this and explained that exercising immediately increases levels of neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline—increasing your mood. Her studies also found that a single workout increases your attention and focus for at least two hours.
