SIERRA NEVADA BALLET PRESENTS:

DRACULA -THE BALLET

In keeping with the Halloween spirit, Sierra Nevada Ballet presents a new original full length dramatic story in dance, DRACULA-The Ballet on October 18, 2024 at 7:30 PM at the Carson City Community Center and on October 26 at 7:00 PM at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts in Reno.

In celebration of the season, the audience is invited to meet the cast and have a party at the fabulous DRACULA BALL which follows immediately after the Pioneer performance at the Renaissance Hotel with refreshments and dancing. Get ballet tickets early and RSVP for the Ball.

Dracula – The Ballet which premiered in 2023 is brought back by audience demand and is the original story ballet created from one of the most famous pieces of English literature about the frightening vampire Count from Transylvania. This original production choreographed by award winning artist Ananda Bena-Weber to the hauntingly beautiful music of Astor Piazolla, draws upon Transylvanian folklore and history and includes drama, intrigue, suspense, sensuality, romance, deception, mystery, horror, death and murder with a touch of Victorian era eroticism.

The story is based on the novel by Bram Stoker, published in 1897 which begins when solicitor Jonathan Harker who is in love with his fiancée, Mina Murray, takes a business trip to stay at the castle of a Transylvanian nobleman, Count Dracula. Harker escapes the castle after discovering that Dracula is a vampire, and the Count moves to England and plagues the seaside town of Whitby encountering several interesting characters including Mina and her best friend, the beautiful Lucy Westenra and her three suitors. After Lucy dies mysteriously, a small group, led by Abraham Van Helsing, hunt Dracula and, in the end, kill him.

Many of the story’s characters have entered popular culture as archetypal versions of themselves. Count Dracula is the quintessential vampire, and Abraham Van Helsing is the iconic vampire hunter. The story has been adapted numerous times in films, Theater productions and ballets.

Two International ballet premier dancers, Malachi Squires and Domingo Rubio lead a full cast of professional dancers with wonderful costumes and innovative sets. Bena-Weber’s new adaptation with Tango-inspired choreography captures the imagination of fantasy lovers with just enough intrigue and mystery to satisfy horror fans.

Dress in your favorite costume and be prepared to be frightened!!! Then join us for refreshments and dancing at the DRACULA BALL on Oct. 26 at the Renaissance Hotel immediately following the Pioneer performance.

For ticket information about this event, and to RSVP for the DRACULA BALL contact the Sierra Nevada Ballet, visit sierranevadaballet.org or call (775) 360-8663

This production follows Jack Neal’s prediction of success for SNB when he wrote: “ at last a truly professional dance company emerging in the Reno metropolitan area”.

Versatile and innovative, Sierra Nevada Ballet is northern Nevada’s professional ballet company and incorporates the popular with the experimental. Always a crowd pleaser, the Ballet offers music and different types of dance from well-known classical to new-age contemporary original pieces.

Good Luck Macbeth Presents:

George A. Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD LIVE
by Christopher Bond, Trevor Martin, Phil Pattison, Jamie Lamb, Christopher Harrison, Dale Boyer, Directed by Jovani Lugo, Assistant Director Lily Perez

It's 1968. We're in rural Pennsylvania and The United States is in turmoil. But then again, when is she never? Night of the Living Dead Live is a terrifyingly hilarious re-imagining of George A. Romero's classic film that follows 6 strangers trapped inside a farmhouse surrounded by flesh-eating ghouls. Their only goal is to survive, but can they even get along? In this production we will honor the historic casting of Duane Jones, largely considered the first Black actor to be cast as a lead protagonist in a horror film, through collaborating with and featuring local BIPOC artists. We will also uncover the history and culture of the Zombie, its origins in Voodoo and Haitian folklore, and its evolution into the horror genre as creatures on a screen. These histories guide our interrogation of the zombie and its ties to slavery. Lastly, we will walk hand in hand with horror and its intrinsic relationship to the nuanced and blatant sensibility of camp, and the joyful and abundant Pulse of queerness. This production explores the horror genre as a vehicle for storytelling as it reanimates to reflect the times.

CONTENT WARNINGS: This production contains graphic content including depictions of racial violence, significant fighting and physical violence, and gore. Viewer discretion is advised.

Bruka’s 32nd season opens with THE BABY "The Bizarre 70’s Cult Horror/Comedy, Live On Stage!" The Baby is written by Dan Spurgeon based on the screenplay of The Baby by Abe Polsky and directed by Michael Grimm. The Baby follows social worker Ann Gentry as she finds herself with a very unusual case: the Wadsworth family, whose youngest member, Baby, is an adult man who sleeps in a crib and acts like an infant. Is Ann on the case to help the disabled Baby escape his abusive mother and sisters, or is her interest in him more...special?
Part bizarre love story, part twisted fairy tale, part mystery thriller and all outrageous and offensive, the 70s cult film comes to the stage with a story so strange and shocking, you won't believe it's happening right in front of you!

The Baby was originally produced by The Visceral Company and had its world premiere on June 12, 2013 as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival. “A satiric production of the 1973 film, a demented, often campy, psychological thriller, with elements of macabre horror.” - Bonnie Priever, Tolucan Times. Andrew Moore from Mad Theatrics calls it “A loving farce of an obscure and obscene film”. The Baby opens Brüka’s 32nd season on Friday, October 4, 2024 followed by an opening night champagne & appetizer reception. Individual tickets for The Baby go on sale on September 5, 2024.
